Yes, there were far more than 116 Trans Am Daytonas made, but this is one the few that came with a factory hardtop instead of the more commonly seen T-top arrangement. The car seen here, properly known as a 1983 25th Anniversary Daytona 500 Limited Edition Trans Am, is described as being a rolling restoration project that’s now a very decent driver, featuring the 305 with Cross Fire Injection that’s said to run well, paired to an automatic transmission. 2,500 of these special edition Daytona models were made, and they came with numerous other upgrades beyond the color-matched wheels and underbody cladding. Find this example here on craigslist for $10,900.
The Daytona coupes got all sorts of visual and mechanical upgrades, but no serious horsepower boost. The blacked out taillights, smooth 15×7 “aero”-style wheels, and aforementioned aerodynamic tweaks were all part of the package. It also got a gorgeous Recaro interior, along with the WS6 Special Performance package that included a limited slip, stiffer springs, swaybars, and four wheel disc brakes. As far as a 1980s special edition model goes, this was a pretty impressive set of upgrades when you consider how many “muscle” cars of the era were shells of their former selves.
The Recaro interior will always be my favorite feature of these Daytona limited editions, and the buckets in this car remain in excellent condition considering they’re unrestored. The seller does not the driver’s side bolster is tired, and could stand to be replaced. The condition of the air conditioning is not mentioned, and the seller does acknowledge that the factory radio is dead but he will install a replacement unit for the next owner. Overall, it seems most of the Firebird’s issues are easy fixes, with the only major cosmetic defect noted as being the paint on the lower half of the body that the seller describes as original, but weak.
The good news is the Firebird runs and drives well, and benefits from some recent attention to the mechanical bits. This includes the front end and brakes being rebuilt, and the transmission having been “…gone through,” but the seller doesn’t detail what that work entailed. The rarity of the Daytona model coupled with the added uniqueness of the “slicktop” roof make this a collector’s item for sure, and the seller’s asking price seems reasonable for a sound driver with some smart maintenance done and no major alterations from stock condition.
I didn’t realize the 305 came with crossfire injection. I learned something new today to add to my automotive knowledge.
I’m not sure that it did. My ’82 Vette was Cross-Fire and had the 350 (L82). This TA has the same engine…
Cross-Fire 305’s were available in 82-84 Trans Ams and Z28’s, but the 350 version was only available in the Vette.
I had one stalled constantly only available in auto traded it in for a 84ho four barrel 5 speed
Got a bad rap due to work bushings on the throttle shafts, but they were actually reliable runners. With larger ports, valves, and exhaust and these would have been quite potent from the factory.
I like it. To me, these are the best of the myriad of “special edition” F-body cars offered through the years. Plus – those seats!
I remember when these came out we referred to them as “cease-fire”. Seems that it may have turned out to be a bad rap however as I have heard several times that they really were not that bad.
Damn, I have no room! I’d like to add this one to my collection, if only I had more storage.
There is yet another a little known Firebird limited edition. The MR MSE Trans AM (Dennis Mecham of Macho Trans AM fame) made from 82 to 1985. Were actually a better looking car than this.
If I had room I’d be on this like fleas on a dog’s back. Very nice find. I think oftentimes its popular to jump on a cliche bandwagon with things like cease fire, etc. My 84 Corvette with cross fire runs perfectly and for its day was pushing the tech envelope nicely. Of course this wont perform like newer performance cars but for its day was about as good as it got, plus these handled very nicely. Definitely fits in to the high tech theme of 80s performance cars. I sure hope someone can enjoy this excellent vehicle
