1 Of 2? 1970 Shelby Mustang GT500

This ad is obviously meant simply as a starting point, a “Hello, there—anyone home?” type of thing, because with as little information as it has, who is going to buy the 1970 Mustang Shelby GT500 that it features? Someone who does this kind of thing on impulse? No, someone who gets in touch with the seller in Niagara Falls, NY, and asks questions. Lots of them.  If you’re that person, you can find this car here on craigslist, with an asking price of $139, which one assumes registers in thousands. Thanks to Tipster T.J. for this discovery.

As has been documented previously at Barn Finds, the 1970 Shelby Mustang was essentially a slightly updated continuation of 1969 models that did not sell. This one, in fact, was built in May of 1969 and was not sold until October of 1970. To make it a 1970, a chin spoiler and black hood stripes were added and updated paperwork was issued.  Just under 800 1970 Shelby GT350s and GT500s were converted in leftover mode like this.

Anyway, despite the very terse ad copy, what do the photos of this car show? A tidy, presumably restored car with a 428-CID 4-barrel Cobra Jet engine, confirmed by the Marti report and claimed original by the seller. The mileage is noted as 74,000. Impressive. Slightly disappointing—that power is put through a Ford C6 automatic transmission. It also has a 3.50:1 rear axle ratio and, on the inside, hi-backed white vinyl bucket seats to go along with its special Grabber Green paint. Handsome, and the interior is said to be original, which is always a bonus if in the kind of condition this one is.

And what do the images not show? The real state of the finish. The quality or extent of the restoration, though good things might be gleaned from the fact that the original grease-pencil marks and assembly line stickers under the hood have been reproduced. We also don’t know the fitness of the mechanicals, if the car is meant to be driven, rather than pushed on and off the trailer for show purposes. (In fact, until we know more, can we assume its show-star status?) Also of note is that this car was delivered to Rockford, Illinois. How rusty was it at some point, or if not at all, why not say so and forestall the first line of inquiry? Because as always with Mustangs (and any classic car, especially a unibody)—the plunker-down of over a hundred Gs needs to know what it looks like underneath. What about in the trunk? Would it be too much to ask for a glimpse in those places? Maybe so, because as I said at the outset, this ad is not the whole deal. It’s a teaser, a starting point.

Rockford, IL. There was a grass knoll on the south side of the dealership and they had a line of these Shelbys set up there. There was probably 7 or 8 at the time. What a sight! My brother was hot to buy one and was working on the deal but the insurance company just laughed. His driving record from his teen-age years killed any idea of driving a GT500. I’ll never forget those Shelbys, though.

I’m liking the Grabber Green, it’s unusual and works for me on this car!

Uhmmm, thousands of people over a 20+ year span.
Craigslist used to be top market place, and for many of us, it still is.
Costs $5, easy to find and navigate, and though is diseased with low life scammers, Craigslist is a much more respectable platform/company than say facebook.
      Thats who =)

Wow!! Very nice, it should bring this and more at a big name auction. I would rather have a manual, only been 3 days since listed.

Sarcastically ?, or you meant your favorite color on any Mustang ?
For me, the color ruins the desirability of an otherwise great car.

Almost bought one back in the day that had a 351W with a 8 Weber carb set up if that makes sense. Didn’t get it because it was a auto and had a slight crunch in the front fender that my dad didn’t like. They wanted a song for it but I bought a 71 Boss 351 instead. Sold that for $4400 back in the day, now I can kick myself in the a@@ twice. Cheers!
