Some times you have to pay a little more to get originality but I have rarely heard an owner complain after they take delivery. This is a one owner, completely stock 1987 Buick Grand National. This car struck fear in the hearts of every Mustang, Trans Am, Corvette and Camaro driver in the late 1980’s. The initial reviews showed that the intercooled turbo V6 could run the quarter mile in the 14 second range with no modifications (Motor Trend August 1987). This example is located in Norman, Oklahoma after spending much of its life in San Antonio, Texas. The Grand National is listed for sale here on eBay with 2 days remaining in the auction. It is currently bid to $30,000 after 23 bids.
The sinister looks of the Grand National are backed up by the powerplant. Buick’s 3.8 liter V6 engine was boosted, fuel injected and intercooled. It was factory rated at 245 horsepower in 1987 and had 355 lb ft of torque. Car and Driver ran a 4.9 second 0-60 and a 13.9 second quarter mile in a pre-production test car. They calculated the horsepower at 290 horsepower so this Grand National was probably tweaked from the factory. Still they raved about the car stating, “Corvette, get outa town. Mustang, move over. Camaro, keep your back to the wall at all times. The biggest, baddest gun west of the Pecos is loose in the streets, and there’s gonna be some shootin’.”
The interior on this car looks almost perfect. The seller states that it is a 9.9 out of 10. The odometer reading on the car shows 62,353. The car is loaded with many options including air conditioning, cruise control, power locks, power windows and a CD player was added. The original radio comes with the car. The seller also mentions that he or she has loads of paper work including the sale agreement, window sticker, customer survey and letters from Buick.
The original lacquer paint is still on the car but it is cracking on the top surfaces like the hood, roof and rear deck. The Grand National has new Goodyear tires and everything is said to work including the mirror light on passenger visor. There were 20,193 Buick Grand Nationals built in 1987 plus 547 GNX edition cars. This was way up from production in 1986 which was 5,512. Buick had found a great formula but unfortunately, this was the last year for greatness!
What’s that other car in the Ebay ad?
Another G/N with after market wheels
Bone Stock, Except for the Air Shocks in the rear. The Speedometer only goes to 85 so what’s the big deal (LOL) I twisted many of them off in my 83 Malibu after I dropped the ZZ3 in it. That was the BIGGEST JOKE for the cars built in this time frame. Nice G/N but 245/290 hp today….. I’d save my money. Never was big on Garage Queens.
Rump is up in the air. Probably has Chinese springs. They always raise the car up a bit because they don’t get the spec right and use weird steel. I would definitely do a PPI. But I guess people are willing to drop over 30 grand for this as it sits, er, stands.
Lol agreed Bick. The natural nose up stance isn’t to be messed with.
Grand Nationals didnt scare me,next to my 70 nova, runnin a 400 small block in those days!
Whatever…
