1-Owner LX 5.0: 1990 Ford Mustang

Clean Fox Body Mustangs are not easy to find despite their relatively robust production figures. Cheap upgrades, low resale values and plentiful stock all make them prime candidates for abuse. That’s why this one-owner LX 5.0 is such a find, as the modifications are minimal (and easily reversible) and the equipment and colors are spot-on. Find this survivor-grade Mustang here on eBay with a $15,991 Buy-It-Now.

The only deviations from stock I see are a truly horrible aftermarket exhaust and the attractive later Cobra wheels. I don’t know who thought the turndown-style exhaust tips were a good look for this car, but please reverse this modification ASAP. The stock muffler pipes look so damn good; other than a side-exit exhaust, there’s no need to mess around with the mufflers. Paint and black plastic trim both appear to be in excellent condition and glass and lenses look good.

The interior was a surprise, as I can’t recall seeing too many of these GTs with a red cloth cockpit. It looks damn good, but that 5-speed manual is even better to lay eyes on. No major alterations from stock condition are obvious to me here, and the Mustang door pockets are doing their thing and sagging towards the ground. Just 67,000 miles are reportedly on the clock, making this Mustang’s annual mileage quite low.

This is perhaps the most reassuring view of them all, as the engine bay appears completely stock with not even a cold air intake to detract from it all. The seller says the Mustang comes with the “Sport” and “Power” packages, rounding out a nice list of features for this well-preserved Fox Body. While the price is strong, I’ve always liked the slightly sleepy nature of the LX 5.0s, and they rarely come as nice as this one.

Telling you all, if you want a foxbody Mustang, you better buy one now… especially in this kind of condition. They are becoming rare…unless you’re looking for one that’s been “rodded” out and turned into a dragster. I (obviously) own one and am constantly looking for ones like this. Once they hit the market, they are gone!
Agree with the author, GT exhaust DOES NOT look good on LX’s! One of the most beautiful things on the LX Fox are those stainless steel STRAIGHT pipes in the rear. Anyone thinking of changing those, needs a sack of nickels up-side the head!

I have an 86 GT with 57k miles on it rag top and am thinking of selling it.

Ten minutes with a sawzall would take care of that…

I prefer using quarters myself, but l guess nickels could do.

My old age hearing thought you wrote, “a slap of nipples up-side-yo-head.” I was just sorting some brass pipe nipples in my bins, and musta’ transposed a bit.

My grandson chopped and welded up some old Dunstall replica motorcycle mufflers, and stuck them on his ’92 GT. The Mustang ‘experts’ at the car meet last month thought they were stock tips.

Pennies work just as well at a fifth the cost. I guess I’d better run & hide if I suggested using a Fox body as a Factory 5 Donor car, eh?

Lol, nahhh, just saying these unmolested Fox’s are rare. I can see one past it’s prime being a candidate for Factory 5, rather see it there than in a salvage yard👍🏼

There are plenty of trashed foxes out there waiting to donate to a kit car. I cringe hearing of good condition cars being pulled apart, tho.

Pennies have been out of circulation in Canada for a number of years now. Too expensive to produce. Guess that you could still keep a sack around for emergencies!

Dashboards in the late 70’s early 80’s got so tacky…lots of square buttons and square speedo housings and the like. Very dated and not in a good way. Still this car with goodies on it does have some interest value with a/c and power windows and such.

Porno red strikes again! At least it has some Black to contrast with though!

Except for the stupid looking tailpipes and the nice rims that’s about as stock looking as they come. Depends on what you want to do with a 5.0 whether to leave well enough alone or begin upgrading for higher horsepower and better handling.
One thing that works against these 5.0’s, whether it’s a GT or an LX like this one, is that they will never ever have a sleepy sleeper image, anything that looks like it’s been tweaked, those down turned tailpipes for instance, and the other guy figures it’s been wrenched.

Lol! It’s funny how people’s opinions differ from person to person so greatly! All you guys are saying that the exhaust looks horrible with the ends angled down but to me the wheels look worse than the exhaust! The wheels just look out of place and too big for the wheel wells. I like the design of the Cobra Wheels but I think that’s a 16 or 17 inch wheel when this year came with a 15 I believe… just doesn’t look right to me in my opinion…nice car though!!

1990 to 1993 mustang’s could have the option of 16 inch pony rims

The 16″ wheels were introduced in 1991 and were standard on all V8 Mustangs. Cobra wheels are 17″, with 5 lugs. 4-lug reproductions are available, so this car may or may not have a 5-lug conversion.

The turned down exhaust looks terrible on the LX, compared to what originally came on the LX…not sure how that’s even debatable…but whatevs….
It can all be changed (wheels included).

I would love to buy a car and sell it for the same price years later.

One of those cars that sneak up on you in terms of value.

Short time ago these were plentiful and mostly unregarded. Stock examples were cheap, and a majority thought the “notchbacks” were ugly and for drag racing only. If it wasn’t a real cobra or “vanilla ice” triple white convertible no one really cared. Guys in t top IROCS were still getting more looks.

    How times change. Thankfully so.

Was it the IROC or the Mullet getting the looks?

In 1990, all V8 cars came with 225/60/vr15 Gatorbacks. The GT still had turbine style rims, LX had 10 hole “phone dial” rims.

In 1991 both LX and GT models went to the 16″ five spoke “Pony” rims. Fender modifications were done to prevent wheel rub.

Have a couple of these cars and love them ! Have had at least 1 fox mustang in my stable at all times since 1987.

1993 OEM Mustang Cobra wheels were 4-lug, not 5. No 5-lug conversion needed to run them on other Foxes.
