$100,000? 1976 Cadillac Mirage Pickup

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

For several years, Cadillac made a luxury pickup that was discontinued in 2013, the Escalade EXT. It was basically a rebadged Chevrolet Avalanche, a four-door pickup with a unique midgate that allowed it to be used both as a sort-of pickup and sort-of SUV. This 1976 Cadillac Mirage is pure pickup, well, as pure as a luxury pickup conversion can be. It’s posted here on craigslist in Palmdale, California and they’re asking $100,000. Here is the original ad in case the listing goes away before you have a chance to read the info.

Those rear side windows aren’t for a rear seating area such as the Escalade EXT would have had, those are basically just a cool and unique design feature, the pickup bed goes all the way up to the back of the front seats. The seller says that this is one of just fifteen Cadillac Mirage pickups to have a golf door and it was owned by the designer himself.

You can see the rear side window detail here, that’s a nice touch. Famous California customizer, Gene Winfield, was chosen to convert Sedan DeVille Coupes into pickups and just over two hundred of them were reportedly built. The seller says that this car was owned by Mr. Winfield himself, hence the eye-watering asking price. I’m not sure why the color seems to vary at the edges, if that’s just a trick of light and shadow or some special paint technique or what’s going on there. There are no photos with the tailgate open which is unfortunate, but the seller has provided a good range of nice photos.

The interior looks great although I didn’t expect to see a steering wheel cover on a $100k Caddy pickup. Speaking of that asking price, a person won’t be getting a Pebble Beach-ready Mirage, there are a few nicks and scratches and other exterior flaws to deal with. The almost-double bump in asking price has to be due to the ownership history, not the flawless quality of this example. The seller says that this one is in the middle of a restoration process and a phone call would be in order to sort out the details here.

The engine is apparently original and hasn’t been rebuilt. It should be Cadillac’s massive 500 cubic-inch V8 which only had about 200 horsepower at this time. This Cadillac pickup isn’t about speed, it’s about rarity and ownership history. Check out the seller’s craigslist ad and let us know your thoughts on this Mirage.

I believe if this individual wants to sell this atrocious vehicle, the first thing to do is lop off one of the zeros in the asking price.

Would this car be worth $100k if Mr Winfield didn’t own this car himself, but built it specifically for Elvis?

Well, it might have the 1976 grill, but, it has 1975 parking lights and taillights. And what is with those Eldorado rear side marker lights? The ’74 through ’76 rear marker lights are integrated into the vertical part of the bumper.
Also, if you look at picture 2 the tailgate seems to be missing it’s interior part.

Didn’t 1974-1976 DeVilles & Fleetwoods all use the same tail lamps? I know 1975 & 1976 front turn signals/parking lights were the same.
I agree with you that the Eldo rear side marker lights are out of place here.

1975 had no chrome on the parking lights or taillights.
1976 had 2 chrome straps on parking lights and chrome around the rear taillights

Being a Ford Durango owner and have always been a “unique” UTE fan. I like this. In my opinion, one of the keys for making a good looking “custom” Ute is the back of the “cab” design. This one is done right. I was fortunate enough to meet Mr. Winfield this past August and spend about 30 minutes of uninterrupted of conversation. (he also gave me an autographed picture of one of his vehicles) As much as I like it, the price is stupid high. Maybe in the price range of $15,000 to $25,000.

I would love to have this Cadillac, but I don’t have$100K to spend. I would however trade my 1996 Chevy Z71, which is restored to nicer than new, for it. I doubt that he would trade. The ad says he has some parts cars but I wonder how an obviously expensive vehicle like this gets to parts cars status.

A potential buyer may offer $50,000, and if accepted, he’ll feel like he stole it. I do kind of like this rig though. If the tailgate actually opens, it would be relatively easy to load a motorcycle, and it’s probably a pretty comfortable cruiser.

I think he is “slightly” high on the price, I had a 79 Caddy coupe deville de elegance, limited model, fully loaded one owner, cream color, 70k original miles, garage kept, double cushion seats, no rust or dents, that I sold about 12-15 years ago and struggled to get $3500.for it.

For a hundred grand, I could buy that turbo T/A pace car & a Grand National. Or a pair of Grand Nationals. Or almost half a house. This is cool, but to me at least, no where near cool enough for the asking price.

The flower cars usually don’t look like this I don’t believe. Are you guys sure this was a flower car and not designed/converted to a pickup truck. If Elvis had one I doubt it was a flowr car. Regardless, I like it.

I can’t stand this!!! Every time there is a Cadillac conversion , especially if it is a pickup type, someone always says it was a flower car.
Flower cars, hearses, ambulances and limos are on a different frame. They are sent to Scollville & Scollville or Miller Meteor or some other PROFESSIONAL CAR MAKER. What is sent from the factory is the frame, engine, transmission, hood, fenders, grill, bumper, dashboard and tires.
The professional car maker then fabricates everything else to make a flower car or hearse or whatever. And they are always 4 doors.
This Cadillac in question was made from a Coupe de Ville, in someone’s bodyshop. It was never a flower car and never will be.
    Kapeesh?

All of the flower cars I’ve seen looked like hearses with part of the back cut off. They even have the side doors but aren’t used (or even open for that matter).I never understood why they were not more refined. This is definitely a custom made pickup, I think others have been featured on this site in the past.

      Thanks Geezerglide,
It just annoys the heck outta me when someone says these custom conversations used to be flowercars.
Mike got it right, no one does big funerals anymore. Most get cremated as we are running out of room for cemeteries.
It’s a shame too, nothing like a long funeral procession lead by a flowercar.

I’ve seen older Cadillacs that were “Ranchero’d” way better than this. The 60’s Cadillacs especially looked good as conversions if done right. At $100k for this, I hope the ad goes away quickly.

Sedan deville Coupe 🤔 There we’re 204 Mirages made from Coupe De Villes not sedans ! 56 Sedan De Villes were made into Castillion station wagons ( even rarer then the Mirage ) ! I happen to own a Mirage and a good friend up here in Alberta owns a Castillion ! So we should know a thing or two about them ! FYI 👍

Does anyone else notice the glaring hole above the rear bumper where the license plate (bracket) would go? Is the rear license plate supposed to be attached (wired) above the gas filler cap? Classy!

The gas filler cap was under the license plate on most GM products from 71-76 including Cadillac. I pumped gas into them at a Texaco station back in the day

Not sure I would pay that much, But it is definitely unique. And with all those cubes under the hood. 1975 and 1976 were the last of the big Caddies. Though they have a thirst for fuel, they are very reliable and well made. And by the way, Johnny Cash actually had a Cadillac made one piece at a time. Google it.

100k is very laughable. No one can arbitrarily put a price on any object. Put it on eBay with a $1 starting bid and where it ends, that’s the current market value. By the way, you kids better rush to get this cream puff. It was listed three weeks ago. Hurry while supplies last.

Just a thought for all thinking this was a flower car for a funeral home. Flower cars were built by the same coach companies that built hearses and were more utilitarian than they were luxurious. They wouldn’t of had leather seats nice stereos or even power windows and seats in most cases. They looked good from the outside but were made for funeral home employees to drive so most luxuries were deleted to save money. They wouldn’t have come in this color either so this was never a flower car.
