$100K SUV? 1986 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

We all know that the Jeep Grand Wagoneer has been on a tear for some time value-wise, especially since it became part of the blue blood crowd’s recipe for owning the perfect beach house with all the right accessories. So, it’s no surprise to see sellers asking crazy money for one as nice as this one. But $100,000? Have we really gotten to that level? One seller seems to think so, as this Grand Wagoneer is listed here on craigslist for $99,900 or best cash offer, with the option of working out a partial trade. It does look quite nice, especially for having 58,000 miles on the clock.

And that’s important with trucks like these, as they are loaded up with leather, woodgrain trim, and lots of chrome on the outside. It doesn’t take much for them to look tired and downtrodden if left outside or simply used as Jeep intended them to be used. These were perfect family haulers when first introduced, and many were passed down to the kids when it was time for mom and dad to get a new car. The point is, finding survivors of this wildly popular 4×4 isn’t as easy as you might think. Yes, plenty of shops have begun restoring the Grand Wagoneers and pricing the finished product similar to what you see here, but those aren’t survivors with loads of preserved originality – this one is.

Obviously, the chrome is near-perfect, but it’s other features – like the driving lamps retaining their impossible-to-find factory stone shields – that lend some credibility to the seller’s stance that this is one of the best ones left. I know, I know, stone shields – who cares? Well, to be honest, I’ve met enough of the country club types who want a perfect whatever, and this is exactly the sort of thing they’d notice. Are details like these alone enough to justify the cost? Well, that’s highly subjective, but it’s impossible to ignore that it provides good evidence as to how preserved this Grand Wagoneer is. The seller notes that it belonged to the owner of the Jeep dealership that ordered it from the factory and that the dealership was the oldest in the country at the time the order was placed.

The listing claims it’s been dealer-serviced since new and never used off-road. The carpets and fabric certainly attest to gentle use, as there are virtually no flaws that I can see from this side of the monitor. It also never left the care of that original dealer principal’s family, as it remained with those caretakers since new. No word if the seller is technically the second owner or listing it on behalf of the first owners, but either way, it may be one of the best examples for sale today. But with that price tag, there’s a good chance it will remain the best one for sale for quite some time. How much would you be willing to pay for this iconic SUV?

Even half that money is too much.

Way too high for what it is. If you’re gonna spend $90K on a GC, get one from Wagonmasters in Kerville, Texas. At least they have been completely refurbed like new.

There’s a typo in the ad listing “ Appreciating at rapped pace” … or maybe it’s an accurate and intentional description about what the seller is looking to do to the person who pays anywhere close to 100k for this. Raped to the ankles at that price!

Even a last-year 1991 runout model in similar condition and mileage is worth half the asking price.

Makes me long for the 1969 Kaiser Jeep Super Wagoneer I once owned.

Was a time in the late 50s or early 60s could have bought one of those B-17s that had been converted to firebomber for $1200.00 LOL

This morning I read an article about how internet speculators drove the price of GameStop stock up over $120/share, despite the fact that its heyday was at least 15 years ago and videogames are now often sold as digital downloads, not physical media.

Why do I bring that up in a story about a $100,000 Jeep Grand Wagoneer? Why, indeed!

    Two observations:

Seems ironic that seller states “Serious only need respond”. Is it just me, or is asking $100K for this admittedly nice truck just a tad disingenuous?

Also, when did AMC start using Monte Carlo steering wheels?

Plenty of GM hardware in these. Same wheel was in my ’84 Celebrity.

AMC installed GM collapsible steering columns in their vehicles starting in 1967, so using a GM steering wheel as well is not much of a stretch. There are also quite a few Hornet/Concord/Eagle pieces in the interior.

Back in the ’80s and ’90s I owned a ’67 Ambassador which needed a new turn signal switch. By that time the original switch was made of unobtanium, but by looking through the shop manual and wiring diagram and comparing the switch to those still offered in the current Delco-Remy catalog I was able to use a switch from a Chevelle-Skylark-Cutlass-LeMans. I remember having to enlarge an opening in the new switch’s base to allow it to fit into the car’s steering column but that was all it took.

    In today’s market, it’s probably a $60-70K vehicle.

It’s funny to read all the naysayers who want to deny that 4X4s are hotter than (insert nearly any other vehicle category here).

Wish I had grabbed these 3 to 5 years ago when they were still reasonably cheap.

Ordinarily, I see an overpriced vehicle and think, “Hey, if someone wants to pay a few thousand extra to get this specific vehicle, so be it.” In this case, though, the seller is clearly off his rocker. Either that, or it’s one of those “yeah, yeah, I’ll list it for sale” ads to quiet a nagging wife. (So glad I’m gay – my husband never gives me a hard time for having too many vehicles.) A quick search revealed others in similar condition, with more miles, for around $20K…. with the coveted light covers.

Who’s to say…Was it W.C. Fields that said “Never give a fool an even break” or something to that effect. Plenty of former and current politicians who made fortunes while in office (I never could figure that out) who have summer homes on Nantucket who can and would drop $100k on this Jeep.

I realize these have a”cult”following, and their good solid trucks but for that money I can get a brand new dodge hellcat, and have enough left over to get another nice gently used truck or suv, hard pass!

Its not even April 1 yet!!! I’m sorry but these were not great vehicles..they used everything plastic bit from the parts bin, threw in some leather and that awful plastic wood down the side and called it a luxury SUV. I drove one of these from LA down through Baja and on the beach down there..it held up OK but was not confidence inspiring. Just my 10 cents..

I clicked on the ad a few min ago and the asking price is listed in the banner as… are you ready for it?… $12,345.
    Then found this down below…
    Respond by EMAIL ONLY
    Put “86” in subject line
I will not respond to emails without “86” is in subject line
Must include your contact phone number in email
    $99,900 or best cash offer
    Serious only need respond

This sounds like a serious scammer to me, and he isn’t bright enough to change the banner part of the ad get is scamming.

An extremely nice looking vehicle but not $100K worth of nice. Considering all the wickets you have to go through to talk to the seller, I will say that IMHO something here doesn’t smell quite right.

My ex father in law had one. We used it for a weekend when it was brand new. Very comfortable but heavy and slow. Poor build quality. The engine blew with 35k miles on it. Way way overpriced here.

    Good morning,
I think it’s time to let it go and stop giving negative comments towards this particular auction. If this person strongly believes his Jeep is worth 100k, then give him a chance to get his bids, no matter what we may think.

I’ll say it again. THE MARKET HAS ALREADY BEEN ESTABLISHED ON THESE. You guys are so far behind the times its comical. Wagonmaster has been selling these for 100k for years now NO SURPRISE.
This gentleman is just going off of the market. IT’S NOT THE 90’S ANYMORE.

Hey Ron…..beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If someone thinks it’s worth $100 large….let them buy it. Be let’s be real here…..this is not worth half that asking price. It a seller places an ad with a crazy asking price….he needs to be ready for the comments. That’s life !!
