1952 MG-TD: Deserving Project

right

The MG TD must be the first car I fell for at about 8 years old. I’m glad to see them becoming collectable again and commanding good prices. Just a couple of years ago nice examples were selling for $10,ooo or less. Now, they often sell for twice that. Robert R found this MG TD on craigslist in St Louis looking for someone to bring it back to life after years of neglect. It’s also here on eBay for $8,300. It looks deserving, although the $8000 asking price is a bit more than even better cars are selling for, like the tan one pictured that sold on eBay for $4,827 and the red one that sold for $6800. It looks like this one is pretty solid, but it’s going to take a lot of work to make it a driver and unless the seller is willing to come down on the price one might want to shop for one in better condition for this kind of money.

e-bay question is answered motor starts and runs. It appears to me that some metal and wood framing work would be needed, along with some serious work on the front end, just to get close to drivable condition. judging from the wear on the right front tire, and what appears to be a blown out spare mounted on the back, could there also be some frame rot or damage. in my personal opinion around $3500 for it, and about another 12K in restoration costs if you do the work yourself.

agree, asking price is a bit to much.

i hope this gets saved. i think it will need a complete rebuilt and that added to the asking price will get costly. great find.

That is a BMC B motor. Not the XPAG original. With that comes the wrong tranny too. Not that there is anything wrong with that. With the amount of work you are going to have to put into this one I’d much rather have that sweet sweet sewing machine motor tapping away under the hood.

I couldn’t quite put my finger on what was wrong under the hood…. seems so empty around the battery…. and then it hit me…. The horns are gone.

8K is a little optimistic methinks.

Looks like a BMC “A” series engine and transmission. It’s hard to tell from the picture but the location of the heater valve gives it away.
