1955 Chrysler New Yorker: Lusty History

1955 Chrysler New Yorker Deluxe

Just when you think you’ve read it all, this 1955 Chrysler New Yorker here on craigslist in Springfield, MO appears like a decent project-grade survivor, with an asking price of $13,500. But there’s more to the story than just a clean Chrysler: this car was supposedly owned by one of the most famous dames of the Lance Creek oil boom that put the town of Lusk, Wyoming on the map in 1919. Dell Burke, the “Lady of Lusk”, set up in town and built an empire out of her brothel, named the Yellow Hotel (it still stands today). When she died in the early 80s, her estate was worth $1.3 million, and this ’55 New Yorker was part of the estate sale to wind down her remaining assets. It comes with a Chrysler Hemi FirePower V8 and just 45,000 miles on the clock with some minor interior work needed. It will never add much value, but I’d get a kick out of the notoriety of driving a car once owned by one of the most prolific madams of the Prohibition era.

Great story there, and a beautiful car! I love that color…
Just to let you know, the Yellow Hotel was burned down in 2012 by the town as part of a controlled fire.

What a beautiful old car. With minimal work to be done for a full restoration. I would rate this car a ‘buy’.

But this plus a a 2door New Yorker Deluxe St. Regis or a 300 that needs work. Scavenge this one for all the parts and you will be way ahead.

This car is way to nice for a parts car. “Great History”.. A proven notarized history of the Madam and the Car should be with this car to fully appreciate its place in “history”.. Quite possibly a Museum piece for the “locals”…
