1962 Alfa Romeo Giulietta: Sprint Veloce

Old Alfa Romeos just ooze soul, and owning one is on my list of things to do before I die. This rare Giulietta Sprint Veloce is one of around 3,000 made and looks like either an old restoration project brought to life or a stalled project that needs finishing. It’s here on craigslist for $34,000 in the upper regions of New York State near Lake Erie.

1962 Alfa Romeo Sprint Veloce Interior

The overall feel of the car is of a good, honest survivor that’s been preserved. My feeling based on photos is that the exterior has been repainted and the interior either well-preserved or re-done many years ago. There are some details missing on the front, like the chrome bumper, turn signals and auxiliary driving lamps. The tag on the key in the ignition may indicate this car is being sold by a shop or at least a very organized owner.

1962 Alfa Romeo Sprint Veloce Engine

Alfa became famous for extracting impressive power from small engines, and those motors were synonymous with building the brand’s racing pedigree. In Sprint Veloce form, the Giulietta turned out 90 bhp, a gain of 10 horsepower thanks to dual-sidedraft Webers and spicier cams.  This car is missing various engine components, most obviously the air intake system that feeds the carbs.

The overall feeling of being a re-awakened restoration project continues to the rear, where surface rust on the wire wheels and rear bumper speak more to graceful aging than outright neglect. The paint still looks too good to be original, but then again, you can do wonders with an orbital buffer on older paint jobs. Given the lack of info in the listing, a follow-up phone call is a must – the price may seem high, but given the scarcity of Sprint Veloce models, it could be a worthwhile investment.

Listing in the link posted is Baltimore CL and in the header has Akron, NY. Not listed on nearest CL which is Buffalo. Just saying, beware. That said, topside looks okay.

I was surprised too, I am ALFA (always looking for another) on Craigslist in WNY, and this never came up.

Note the carbs are there on the passenger side, but the exhaust header is missing. At least there are rags stuffed in to keep stuff out. From appearances this is a later engine though, but that would be fine for making a nice driver.

Also note the red overspray near the front bumper mounts, this looks like a possible hasty repaint. Also good luck finding a bumper, but at this point maybe just leave it off and patch up the holes.

Loads are charm here though, and they are even more handsome and well proportioned in person. Definitely a person favorite of mine.

Don’t you just hate it when a person is selling an exotic in a questionable state of repair and in their description they say SO SO much!?!?!? I mean, they are only asking $34K, chump change to the average consumer. So obviously no need to go into detail. Look at the pictures and send him the money. I am sure he’ll let you know, once he figures it out, where it can be picked up. Oh, AND he lists something of this lowly stature on only the best, safest, absolutely the number one choice for high end buyers/sellers/con artists – Craigslist!!! Yeah, you cannot go wrong on this deal!!!
(oh, it looks like a VW Karmhan Ghia to me, just my HO)
