Rally ‘Round the Flag: 1966 Honda CM91 Super Cub 90

This is a rare little thing, it’s a 1966 Honda CM91 Super Cub 90 with Rally Kit. It’s in Newington, Connecticut, and is listed on eBay with an unmet opening bid of $1,500. These were an experiment from the “Honda Custom Group” to try to drum up sales in the US. They are indeed rare bikes.

Underneath this rare “Rally Kit” is a standard issue CM91 Honda, somewhat similar to the one that you meet the nicest people on. Honda also made a “Roadster Kit” which was a little different than the Rally Kit. Not to mention a “Boss Kit” and a “Student Kit”. Here is an old advertisement showing all four models. For an extra $50, the Rally Kit was the one to have as it was sort of a cafe-racer-style which was popular at the time. I’m not sure which one is rarer, but any one of them, or preferably all of them, should be jumped immediately on if you’re a Honda collector. They are very rare bikes. That’s an 89.5 cc engine with 7.5 hp, so that didn’t change at all.

The CM91 received the new OHC engine, which was an update from the pushrod engine of the CM90. All kinds of parts are still available, at least for the base motorcycle, the rally kit parts will be harder to find, but a Honda forum should be of some help. The seller says that they will part out just the Rally Kit pieces, so if you have your own Honda 90 this may be a good price for just those parts.

Tracking down a seat pan may have been a chore, but this one is still usable. The seller says that this ” Rally Kit appears to be all original and complete except for the missing seat covering and decals. The side covers are also missing but I believe the only difference from a standard cover is the rally decal. Seat upholstery was deteriorated beyond repair and removed to show the condition of the seat pan.” If a person is hooked into Honda forums and is a dedicated fan and collector, this would be a great bike to restore. Are any of you fans of these smaller, “factory custom” Hondas? Have you ever owned one of these?

This was the new overhead CAM engine. All the cubs were overhead VALVE engines. (No flatheads!) I still own the 1965 Honda C100 (Honda 50) Cub that my parents gave me for my 15th Birthday. I learned to ride on that bike and many years later, my son also learned on it. He then bought a 90cc version of the cub. Both are the typical red & white with leg shield. When BBC did a show on the top 100 bikes of all time, the Honda Cub came in at #1, as the most influential bike of all time! The 49 cc “Honda 50” had a 43 mph top speed, got well over 200 mpg, and was totally indestructible. Millions (literally) were made and variations are still in production. Honda cars, and all Honda power products are all descended from the Honda Cub, which formed the basis of Soichiro Honda’s empire.

Thanks, Crazydave. I mistyped that, my fingers automatically typed valve instead of cam.

The Honda S90 was my first bike and although being small was a real motorcycle. The one thing that comes to mind with these, is the selenium rectifier was a weak link. I’m sure today there is a modern component that you can replace it with. My 90 got 100 mpg and was a great starter for a 120 lb kid.

I have an original 1968 Cub with a NOS kit installed in 2003! My bike was a museum piece at Honda of Chattanooga when I bought it in 2013. I have the original Tenn. Title and complete documentation on the then available kits, all the packaging material and boxes. The kit basically included the front assembly from a Honda Sport 50 (C110) plus the unique Rally components. These bikes are very rare and currently I am trying to gather more information by posting on the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club classified. You can find more information on Facebook by entering “Honda Cub Rally” and read the posts from Honda of Chattanooga. I believe the Rally is the rarest kit, the Roadster the more popular one..

I remember looking at the Honda Super 90 in 1967 but chose a Yamaha 100 Twin Jet instead. More power, two cylinders, two carburetors and two pipes made the Twin Jet choice a no brainer for a 16 year old.
