440 V8 Project: 1967 Dodge Coronet R/T

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Dodge entered the 1967 model year focused on the youth and/or performance market. The new Charger was in its second year and the Coronet would gain a powerful model, the R/T (short for Road/Track). It had a 440 cubic inch V8 as standard equipment, so the Dodge Boys were serious about speed. This ’67 R/T was a barn find when the seller bought it. He/she has invested $10,000 in getting it running again, but cosmetic work remains. Hat’s off to Mitchell G. for this cool Mopar tip!

Perhaps because so many Coronets were built in the 1960s as family transports, the R/T wasn’t as big a seller as other Dodge products with the R/T tag. In its first outing (1967), Dodge built 9,553 2-door hardtops and 628 convertibles. They tend to turn up less often today, keeping company with the Super Bee which was another light seller compared to the Charger (when its sales finally took off with a redesign in 1968).

When the seller found this Dodge, it had been sitting for many years – but in a dry location. The prior owner had begun to prep the body for work, removing the chrome (now in the trunk) and applying grey primer over the red paint. Some metal was needed but not done at that time. The original engine was replaced with a 440 from 1971, but we don’t know if that’s factored in as part of the work the seller has done or if it came to him/her that way. The R/T has the correct Hi-Po heads and exhaust manifolds.

As a result of replacing a ton of parts, this Dodge will now run and drive, though the seller recommends not attempting to do much of that until it’s finished. Work done this far includes an aluminum radiator, Pertronix ignition, carburetor, wiring harness (engine), brake and electrical parts, and a host of others. Hailing from a carport in Dallas, Texas, this Mopar is available here on craigslist and the ante is $22,500 OBO. Trades for another muscle car but with a 4-speed transmission would be considered.

Nice project car but the 440 is not a HP stamped engine. It’s stamped 440 for a Chrysler since the engine is corporate blue. The heads could be from the other 440 that came with the car. If all the parts are there it’s worth $20,000 since it runs. If this is done right it will be double the price paid. They are hard to find today in decent shape. Mostly rotten out from rust. Good luck to the next owner. 🐻🇺🇸

I looked at one of these that was sitting in an old garage 30+ years ago, It was a tired looking old hot rod and I asked what he wanted for it and the guy said he could get 25,000 for it in California. I told him he needed to take it to California. It was a 440 automatic car

Yep….seller was on the BBody’s Only site hunting and wishing for one of these R/T’s and bought this one. Now it looks like he’s flipping it as a Barn Find…..oh well….
