1968 Dodge Coronet 440 Police Car?

1968 Dodge Coronet 440 Police Car

The seller of this Coronet claims that it was a police car, has a 440 V8, and was stored in a “beautiful barn”. They don’t provide much more information than that though, so it’s hard to determine what is really going on here. If the claims are true, this really could be the “barn find of the century” as the seller suggests, but I’m not so sure. Take a look here on eBay where it’s currently listed with a starting bid of $4,100 and no reserve!

Coronet Dash

This shot of the dash is almost convincing. You can see some switches for the lights and siren, but there’s also an aftermarket tape deck and “barefoot” pedal. Normally, a police car speedometer would have a certified marking on it and markings at least every 5 mphs.

Hood Scoop

This one was eye catching at first, but the more I look at it, the more I think the seller is trying to present this car as something it is not. If there really is a 440 under the hood it may still be worth some consideration, but without more photos and a VIN, I’d be cautious with this one. That doesn’t mean that I dont think it would be fun to continue the theme that someone started here…

Every single word of the seller’s ad sounds like B.S.

Given that the ad says next to nothing that isn’t a huge claim!

I’m glad I looked again to see the title of the ad included “Police Car” as I was about to put all the blame on Barnfinds.

To be fair though, it doesn’t appear that the seller is claiming that the car has a 440, it is Barnfinds assuming that!

Further, to the uninitiated this certainly appears to be a Police Car.

I doubt the seller is intending to misrepresent the car.

I emailed the seller, he said he had no engine pictures, but assured me it was a 440 Interceptor engine. I’m still gonna bet it’s a 318.

Can’t get one past you, unless it’s a homophone obviously! Yes! It was a field with a barn in the field. There were quite a few cars, so I’m not sure whether this particular car was in the field or in the barn. Quit being libelous, you don’t KNOW if it’s an ex drag car; that’s your OPINION & you know what they say about those, but you’re welcome to it. However, stating an opinion as fact is called libel & that’s just not legal or intelligent. EXAMPLE-It’s my opinion, you are a great armchair quarterback.

I TOTALLY agree! It’s always a pleasure to find others who think it’s absolutely hilarious when people post like they’re omnipotent, yet the correct usage of Kindergarten level words eludes them! “Dan” went the extra mile for a laugh & made sure his homophone horror was in all caps so we all can enjoy! Thank you, Dan for the belly laughs you gave me, my hubby, & our 7 year old!

Coronet 440 is the model. There were several Coronets that year. The Coronet, Coronet Deluxe, Coronet 440, Coronet 500, and the Coronet R/T. Interestingly, the 440 engine was only available in the Coronet R/T. Not available in the Coronet 440.The car most likely has a 318 in it.

I drove my grand mother to town once a month in her 1968 Dodge Coronet 440. It was red with black inside and a four door. It had a 440 with 4-barrel and factory duel exhaust. It was right on the air cleaner and this car at the time didn’t have 20,000 miles on it.

Lee is right. You are either mistaken or your grandmother had an extremely rare and undocumented build.

Two 440s are known to have been built with the Hemi so who knows.

Hi, this is John’s (seller) wife, Jess. Yes, the yellow car is an Opel GT. It has a 4 cylinder engine, automatic transmission, Weber 2 barrel carb & 109k miles. As for the most important question, I think he just got busy & spelled “Gem” as “Gym”. I appreciate good grammar myself, so I’m not proud he obviously didn’t proofread. On the bright side, he didn’t mix up homophones on our wedding day or when he proposed. I got a GEM & not a treadmill on both occasions! Thank goodness!!!! He’s asking $5,299 if you’re interested. It’s in good running condition. My son & hubby made an impulse buy on their way back from Denver. I’m not pleased that we now own 5 muscle cars, so please call my hubby, John, if interested. His number is (214) 522-4456. He’s motivated I assure you! He’s got lots of pics to send.

I agree with Chebby. No certified speedo is a big sign. I think it’s a farm kids old version of a back roads hot rod.

That’s what I’m thinking but it almost seems a bit large for an Opel.

I’m more interested in the thing in the background that I too seem to think might be an Opel GT. Uh, Why’d he spell Gym instead of Gem? C’mon now. I don’t want a gym.

Thank you, Gary for yet another LIBELOUS statement that’s easily proven NOT to be a scam. FREE ADVICE FOR FUTURE-If you don’t KNOW for sure it’s a “total scam”, preface those kinds of comments with a statement such as, “IN MY OPINION”. Wording is everything! I bet his wife is just bursting with gratitude for the amazing vacation you’re going to help finance! Opinions should NOT be stated as fact, unless you enjoy donating to your lawyer’s coffers. Hard lesson to learn!

I agree with most here, probably not an original cop car, more like “good ol’ boy” add ons, but they can claim what they want. Most police cars back then were Plymouths or the bigger Dodge Polara. ( seems the Dodge was most powerful cop car ever, with the 440) I found a neat article from Allpar, kind of my “go-to” site for anything Mopar, and they say, in ’68, like 85% of all cop cars were Mopars, mostly Plymouths but not the Coronet. And yes, that’s an Opel GT in the background.

In 1968 Dodge made a police coronet. It came with a 383 4 barrel Carter with a certified 140 MPH speedometers. It was the counterpart to the Plymouth Belvedere police special-thus the same car with different trim. I spent some time in both!

WOW!!! That comment comes across as petty. A simple, yet annoying typo, & you feel justified in using the unimaginative pejorative, “Texas redneck BS”. I’m gonna guess you don’t have much of a life or education for this to bug you so much. Let me assure you that he does INDEED know the difference between a “gem” & a “gym”. He’s not a redneck by ANY means. He’s educated, ambitious, multi-talented & probably wrote it in haste because he had to get back to living his life! You should try it!

Quality trumps quantity in my book! It shows he’s not a car dealer. He’s a real estate broker, so he’s too busy to sell on eBay all day. We usually donate our used items to friends or charity. That’s the first time I’ve heard of altruism in a negative context. Try being a little more positive; you’ll be happier!

We donate our used stuff to charity. My husband is not a car dealer. I AM concerned that you have an unusual fascination w/my husband, as evidenced by your scrutinizing his every keystroke & your apparent irrational anger towards him. We have children & you seem to be “obsessed” in my opinion. Should I look into getting a protective order? You’re making me fear for my family’s safety!

I do find it very suspicious that in the side view pic. you can see something written on the hood along the front edge. To me it looks like a name, possibly from its possible drag car days. But in the pic. from the front, the paint is gone in that exact spot. Movin’ on………..

Not all Police Cars were interceptors. Many were locally sourced and simply run through a paint shop to get the required look. I agree, it is probably a 318 but that does not mean it wasn’t a Police car at some point. Also, not all big blocks were 440’s. My dads favorite engine was a big block 360 and off course many cars were built with 383’s., most likely what GP’s grand mother’s car had. 383 4 bbl engine was nothing to be taken lightly.

I think if its a running driving 68 coronet even if it has a 318 or 383 it looks to be in solid shape I’d cough up the 4100 for it and put that thing back on the road, be a cool rig to cruise in. At that price point whether its a cop car or not doesnt really matter either way i dont think its a bad price, if he was trying to get top dollar because it was a cop car then I’d have a problem with him possibly misrepresenting it.

As Jake Elwood said and I quote, In describing the car to his brother “It’s got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It’s got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It’s a model made before catalytic converters so it’ll run good on regular gas.” That was a funny movie and I think of it every time I see something like this.

68 and 69 Coronets 2 dr.s have a very nice line on the rear quarter that the 4 dr. coronets don’t have I.M.O., one of my all time favorite cars, had probably 5 or so the best being a 69 Road and Track, or R/T,More distinct than the Runners, of the same time. Damn I Still wish I had it.

Too much trim to be an A38 (police-package) car. Also, look at the speedo- no “Certified Calibration” marked in it. Betcha if you looked under the bubble gum machine on the roof there is no reinforcement plate. Guy is so full of sh@t you could dry out his printed words and fertilize your flower bed. Just saying…

Yes, the husband got a bit teenage boy when he saw all these fantasy cars from his youth. I’m not proud of his impulse buy or of the fact he used “gym” instead of “gem”. I appreciate good grammar too! However, what is this deal with maligning the character of someone you don’t know?!? I just don’t see the appeal in being needlessly cruel. Just sayin, if I thought for a second that I wouldn’t be able to recoup the cost of the paper used to draw up a lawsuit against you; I’d actually perform your experiment, video tape it, & sue you for libel.

Maybe the seller’s wife was with him when he INSISTED on stopping at a random house in the searing heat. Maybe his wife met the owner’s & can confirm that they are both retired police officers (as well as the wife’s father). Maybe the seller’s wife is an attorney & took a screen shot of your comment, because she KNOWS your “crack pipe” comments constitutes libelous statements that are easily disproven. Maybe said seller’s wife is annoyed enough to have her college roommate, who’s licensed to practice law in Colorado file a lawsuit. Although this, theoretically would be under federal jurisdiction. Finally, maybe his wife will FINALLY get her dream vacation to Sardinia-at YOUR expense of course! Thanks for being SO obvious with your libel & making it SO easy to prove. Sure hope the ex-officers don’t feel like you disparaged their great character by inferring they keep a stash of crack pipes. Finally, sure hope the African American former police officer doesn’t find your comment racist!
