1969 Lotus Elan With Cosmetic Needs

lotusbhcc

“Same California owner since 1977.” Those are the words you’ll find in the eBay listing for this 1969 Lotus Elan, which is going to need a serious cosmetic restoration to even begin to look like it did in the late ’70s. Sold by Beverly Hills Car Club, a somewhat infamous dealer for their ability to smoke out barn finds like this Elan, the bidding is active with the reserve unmet. This little Lotus seems to bear the battle scars of prior accident damage, long-time exposure to the elements, and general neglect. Not much is said about the rest of the car or whether its a matching-numbers example – you’ll just have to call the shop to find out more. These can be sweet driving machines though is it might be worth the effort. Thanks to Jim S. for this find!

I’ve seen some of their listings. Don’t expect it to be cheap. They had a 69 Aston Martin in fair shape missing the drivetrain. They wanted 80k for it.

I saw the old fire engine that was up for sale . How about this a Volvo Police car fully functioning with lights and siren and looks to the public to be a real one . This was also on screen in the Bond film Skyfall and a couple of TV shows in the UK. Guide price £1,500 to £2,200 . The auction is end of this month .

I had a deal go bad with BHCC that underlines imo the ‘somewhat infamous’ description. They had an Alfa Montreal that I really wanted to buy. We came to a price agreement–but then they fully revealed (imo) their transparency philosophy when they absolutely refused to let a third-party, nearby, well-known Montreal expert do a PPI on it. They would ‘inspect’ it at my cost and send me the report. Really. That’s when I lost my faith in them forever.

I like Lotus’, everything. Looks, concept and legendary handling. I am not a marque specialist by any stretch of the imagination, but I know enough to have one look over something that looks like this before considering purchase from anyone, because there are all kinds of issues that a rookie like me would NEVER see until the car was disassembled. If they would be less than agreeable to a third party inspection, I would certainly be agreeable to keep my money in my pocket..

Kind of like the way grocery stores sell salmon fillets with the skin side down.
