1970 Mustang Fastback Garage Find

While this 1970 Ford Mustang isn’t a real Boss 302, the seller makes that clear and it is available for a lot less than a genuine 1970 Boss. It’s listed for sale here on eBay, where bidding so far has reached $17,100 and any reserve has been met. The Mustang currently resides in a garage in Savannah, Tennessee, just waiting for someone to tow it home. Wait a minute, what do you mean, tow? Read on to find out more.

The car certainly looks nice enough under the dust. The seller states that they did not cover the car in the garage for fear of what the cover would do to the car. Although a plastic tarp in some outside or moist cases is a bad idea, I’ve never heard of a good car cover doing harm when used indoors — but maybe I’m wrong? It also appears from this shot that “real” reflective Boss striping has been used on part of the car (look at the trunk lid) but non-reflective has been used on other parts (see the fender cap just to the right of it. Or it could be different angles to the flash photo?

Like I said above, the body looks pretty solid despite the overspray; it’s especially annoying under the hood. The seller doesn’t tell us much about their ownership period; I don’t think they had the car painted and have driven it less than 2,000 miles since acquiring it. They did have the rear end changed out for a more cruising-friendly ratio but can’t remember exactly what that was.

Apart from the horrible steering wheel and shift knob, the interior doesn’t look bad at all, or at least it wouldn’t after a good cleaning. The seller has purchased an additional new gauge cluster and radio bezel to replace the woodgrain surround with black and these components are included with the auction.

Under the hood, we have a 351 “Windsor” V8. Unfortunately, it is a non-starter at the moment, with the seller thinking that the starting system is turning it over too slowly to start. Also, they don’t want to try further starting efforts due to old gas being in the fuel tank. The Holley carburetor was rebuilt about three years ago, so it’s possible that the gas is that old or older. I’d want to know more details about any rust before bidding, but this looks like it could be a very enjoyable car without a whole lot of work. Barn Finds readers, what do you think? Anyone out there with a “real” or “clone” Boss 302?

The VIN shows it was born with a 302…2v….and you are right on about that steering wheel…with the prices of 69-70 Mustangs going up, this may not be such a bad deal…

Worth fixing,I’d put a 351 Cleveland motor in it,just fix the essential stuff, and enjoy.

We had a red 70 Mustang just about like this after we rolled her 68 Chevelle. It was a 302 automatic fastback. Wish we would have kept it. Same old story. Needed a bigger car when she got pregnant. If it wasn’t so far away.
By the way it is Derek from Vice Grip Garage.

Stripes alone don’t have much to do with being a Boss 302 clone, not really. No, never owned one, seen some but they’re rare to see on the road these days at least for me. To be a real clone it needs the Boss under the hood. Or,
351 ‘Clevor’ a Windsor with Cleveland heads and special intake, solid lifters, it is kinda like the Boss 302 but with more inches. 351 HO Cleveland, the one used in the Boss 351 Mustang is an interesting idea using the highest test octane gas you can find. The most interesting Mustang for me is the other Boss, the 429. All fastback ’69-’70 Mustangs are cool, not all of them were speedy.
