$850 1970 Triumph GT6+ Project

1970-triumph-gt6-project

The GT6 is essentially a Spitfire with a roof and a little more power. The standard four banger had a hard time lugging around the extra weight, so Triumph stuck their inline-six under the bonnet. The resulting car was handsome and had much of charm, along with the flaws, of the Spitfire. Triumph released a MKII version with a few improvements, hence the “+” sign after the 6, and some compromises to comply with new laws. This particular example is located in Minneapolis and is in need of a full restoration. Find it here on craigslist where the seller is asking $850. Thanks goes to Jeffrey O. for the submission.

I had a ’73 many years ago. It was originally a maroon colour, but had been repainted a Ferrari red. It was a fun little rollerskate, but it did have its flaws.

I’ve seen worse, You’d really have to be in love with a GT6 to take it on.

These are fun cars, great handling, I had a Spit about 1969 I think & had a friend that had a GT6 at the same time, they were fun cars but the GT6 was not beefed up for the added torque of the 6 so it threw U joints & tended to pull the unibody apart at the rear mounting points of the suspension & differential. But then they were driven hard by a bunch of teenagers.

They always reminded me of baby E-Type 2 plus 2’s

My first new car was a ’68 GT6 that was part ’67 (Toggles) and part ’68 (“Pennsylvania” knockoffs). Great fun to drive except when the inside rear wheel tried to tuck under (Solved with the later ones). Head gasket blew at 17.000 miles (Warrantee was 12 months/12,000miles, natch!), with five friends “helping” it was a six case of beer job…traded it in on a ’65 4.2 E-Type ragtop. What a difference!

I would say that your trade was apples & oranges, but it was more like apples & caviar!

I had a 1968 Cortina GT that was pretty souped , I was coming out of Philla one nite and on the ramp getting on to 95 ( I think it was 95 ) I hooked up with a GT6 ,and got my clock cleaned but good , even tho he had a female passenger and I was alone . Always liked those after that !! just saying !!

When I was twenty, my girlfriend owned one in white, she wrecked it on the Kansas Turnpike one night, tore the car into three pieces, she didn’t survive the crash, hit a guardrail. that picture of that damn car still gives me the willies even forty plus years later.
