The original owner of this 1973 AMC AMX Pierre Cardin edition must have had fun checking boxes on the order sheet, it’s just about as loaded with features as it got in that era. This would be one fantastic car to own being a rare Pierre Cardin edition with a 401 V8 and 4-speed from the factory. The seller has it listed here on eBay in Miami, Florida, the current bid price is $14,700, and there is no reserve. Thanks to Larry D. for sending in this tip!
One of my best friends in school had two older twin sisters – and that wasn’t why he was my best friend – and one of his sister’s boyfriends had an AMX just like this only without the Pierre Cardin interior. That was one fun car to ride in when he would drive it to high school every now and then. I’m way overdue to get one since that was over four decades ago now.
The redesigned second-generation AMC Javelin came out in the fall of 1970 for the 1971 model year and this car decodes to exactly what the seller says it is: an AMX with “W” interior trim – being the Pierre Cardin special upholstery, headliner, and door panels – with a factory 401 V8 and factory 4-speed. This is a very special car and frankly, I’m surprised that the current bid price is this low and there is no reserve.
You can see that there is work to do on the exterior, and the interior looks like it needs a good cleaning more than anything, thankfully. The headliner looks perfect as do the seats both in the front and in the back. I would love to see this thing all detailed, I bet it would be sharp. The two-seater AMX went away in 1971 and 1974 would be the last year for the Javelin.
You can see that this car also has factory air-conditioning, another option that this car has. The engine is AMC’s 401 cubic-inch V8 which would have had 255 horsepower this late in the game, but it would still leave some fresh rubber marks on the road. This car has an amazingly-low 42,437 miles on it and after a bit of rust repair, paint, and some general updating you’d have a show-stopper. Have any of you owned an AMX of this era?
I love Pierre !
Pierre from my home country
How many potential buyers/fashionista’s who would normally be interested in the Pierre Cardin interior know how to drive a car with a manual transmission?
This would have been eye catching when new and will be again, once it’s restored.

Dare I say…not many Steve. Not too many at all lol
Among the crowd I hung out with, this interior wasn’t exactly eye-catching. But, the offer of the 4-speed would offset that in a heartbeat. Love the car. Wish I could. But, same old story: money, space, etc.
SOLD with a high bid of $21,889.

I know how to drive a manual trans, but I,m not a fashionista.
Javelins (68-74) had the coolest vinyl tops of any car of that era.
Personally, I think that this type of top ruined the looks of the car. (IMO)The earlier split ones that started at the back edge of the windows running forward and had the body colored center look cool, though. :-)
I wonder if there is any production data on the Javelin? The 401 option wasn’t real popular in 73 with the oil embargo and with the way the car is optioned I’m sure there would only be a handful of cars built like this. Maybe AMCguy can chime in.
1973 Cars were produced from the fall of 1972 until late spring 1973. Oil embargo was October 1973 and affected the 1974 cars.
Looks like more fun than than the standard fare of mustangs camaros and chevelles.
The 4 speed is more rare in PC interior than the 401
Owned a ’71 Javelin with a 304, 3 spd that was later changed out for a Rambler 4 spd. Wasn’t an AMX but was one of the funnest cars I ever had. Silver with the wide rib red corduroy interior.
Still have my 1973 Javelin AMX, with 401, Auto Trans, factory AC with Pierre Cardin interior.
Too bad its not closer. Spending that kind of money would need a personal inspection. The AMX checks all the boxes though!
Anyone that was halfway serious about buying a car wouldn’t mind going to inspect it or, having someone inspect it for them. I love these comments where people make excuses as to why they can’t buy this or that particular car…when they were never going to buy it anyway, lol.
4 speed console is rare has hens teeth, also 4 speed with air not common either………cool car
I have a 69 with Gear Vendors overdrive behind the 4 spd……..Rumpity Rumpity
WOW……… Pierre Cardin & AMC. What strange mash-up. AMC must have paid him really good LOL……
Beautiful. My ex-brother-In-Law did lots of show quality body work in the day, so he had access to all sorts of super rare cars. He had ’73?, ’72(?) PC with the 401, auto. Purple. Back then it was rare and while driving with the front raised fenders, one got the feeling the front end was going to lift straight up! I’ve owned lots of driver Muscle-cars, but these AMXs are really growing on me. All of later AMCs were heavy on the plastic parts and trim, so getting some parts are pretty hard to find.
I have a Plum Pierre Cardin 73 AMX 401 auto, and think they are amongst the most beautiful designs of the entire Musclecar era.I’ve had several first gen AMX’s,including the 68 project in my fleet now.Could be an age /era thing ,but I far preferred the small “real” amx back in the day.Things change, and today I’ll take the Corvette ish fender bulges and taillights. This would be one to have;full poad with PC,401,manual !
I swore no more cars from Florida, but this one has my attention !
Interior and standard shift are the highlights on this car. It is gorgeous, but I agree a personal inspection would be mandatory. For that reason, I am out.
Well, that was easy. You must not have wanted it TOO badly, lol!
I bought my 1974 AMX In 1973 and I still have it. I just had it freshly repainted original colour.
I like pierre Cardin cologne, but that interior is even too ugly for the 70s…lol,but it’s a cool car, with top dog drivetrain, and should be fixed up and enjoyed, obviously the bodywork will be expensive to do right.
That is one garish interior
I’ve always wondered, and still do, how the engine designers could grind out 4 or 5 different displacements from the same block. I understand space reasonably well, but, they did it!! I would love to have any one of the AMC’s, AMX’s or Javelins. they have always been one of my favorite cars. This one needs a bit of TLC. Yet, I believe it would be worth every ounce of energy. The rewards are in the making.
Auction update: this AMX sold for $21,889 and then was relisted for $25,000 and then was relisted again and sold for $22,500.
