1980 Mercedes 280CE: Cheap Euro Spec?

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This is a potential deal, a 1980 Mercedes-Benz 280CE coupe listed on eBay with Euro bumpers and headlights, which may indicate the presence of the Euro-spec twin-cam six cylinder motor with approximately 180 bhp on tap. Though not running, the starting bid of $200 and no reserve in sight means this might go quite cheaply, which would be a bargain for a grey market edition. Though not quite the typical poverty-spec that we’ve come to associate with true Euros (crank windows, no A/C, cloth seats), this durable W123 would still offer a much-improved driving experience compared to the U.S. versions of the same car. Could this be an opportunity to get into a more powerful 280CE on the cheap?

I bought 4 rotors and a complete set of brake pads for my 240D last year from Mercedes, total under 300.00. Some parts can be expensive but Mercedes stocks parts for there older cars that no one else does. I saw one identical to this on Mercedes dealer showroom in Germany 2 weeks ago for 20,000e The prices on these are going up……

Yeah, I’ve looked at them a few times as a project and didn’t see any prices that scared me too much. Plus they still show up in the boneyard from time to time – a testament to their longevity.

I had a 1969 250CE, most comfortable car I’ve ever owned and the lines of the hardtop design are quite attractive. Mine was an automatic and the steel tip of the speedometer cable broke off and destroyed the aluminum transmission case. These cars are a pleasure to drive, could be a bargain if the engine starting issue is simple.

Unfortunately there are too many uninformed comments made on this post.

Worn out Euro model (top speed on the autobahn has no limit) then the car comes to the US and get’s a new (to it) odometer in miles (which shows another 199k miles on it !!).
You do the math on this non-running parts car !!

Parts can be reasonable, if you know your stuff.

They made 15k or more of these 280CE cars (Coupés) and more with other engines ,so, hardly a rare car.

Seller cannot be trusted “we do not take any offers. Cars will be sold to the highest bidder”. ….. yeah, right !
