The 1980s Called: 1976 Chevrolet Corvette Custom

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

If the 1980s called wanting this car back, I don’t think I would give it to them! While cars like this are often rolling examples of everything some folks disliked about the 1980s, they exemplify everything other people (like me) love about the era! This car has clean custom lines that flatter the original design of the car, and it is funky stylish without being completely over the top on the outside (we will get to the interior!). This car was originally owned by a designer for the Casey Jr. Circus train at Disneyland, and thus much of the underbody has had circus animals hand-painted on it. This car has a very interesting story to match its interesting appearance, and can be found here on eBay in New York with an asking price of $37,500.

Every part of this car is pretty and unique, and while the rest of the car may be fairly wild the engine is much more tame and traditional. Since the sale of this car to the second owner, it has changed hands two more times for a total of four owners prior to the seller who is a dealer. It was not driven much after the second owner sold it and per the ad, “I have had the car since January of 2017, and have gone through the car completely, including all new fluids, brake line and power steering flush, cooling system flush, new front rotors and brake components, new vacuum lines, complete tune-up, carb cleaning and rebuild, and a full safety check to make sure that it is ready should the next owner actually want to drive it anywhere!”

The interior is my favorite part! Likely the least favorite part of many, this is the most glorious interior I’ve ever seen as far as button-tufted velour goes. Even the floor mats are button-tufted! The whole inside of this car looks like a couch, and I’m perfectly okay with that. Remember what I said about the exterior styling not going over the top? The interior fully makes up for it! This is certain to bring quite a reaction at events and from any new passengers.

The sidepipes, wheels, gold-finished luggage rack, and striping all work in harmony to make this Corvette truly a child of the 1980s. According to the seller, the car gets its styling from lots of fiberglass work, “A 1980 ECKLERS rear tail panel was glassed right into the body, as was the ECKLERS front spoiler system with recessed headlamps, smoked covers, and custom made color-matched caps.” The seller also says this car looks nicer in person, and I believe it! I strongly suggest viewing the listing to read the full description. The seller spares no detail, but it is simply too much to list here. Every inch of this car has been gone through and serviced to make this Corvette road ready. Last but not least, a video of this car can be found here on YouTube.

Other than the interior and price it isn’t bad.

I’d rather see this than a stock corvette from that era. It represents a point in time. If restored to stock, it becomes another bland mid-70’s smogger that was killing time until it eventually became bookended by much better corvettes that came before and after.

Ugh. Not only would I send it back to the ’80s, I’d pay for the shipping.

I’d have to paint over the circus animals, but I could live with everything else. Think how quiet the interior is with all that padding!

The steering wheel and side pipes are nice. The rest is ?? Could have gotten a model for the photos with less tattoo’s, not something I care for (that’s a personal thing).

I’ve always liked sidepipes on these Vettes, but there is little else, on this one, that would make me want to be near it.

Really like the paint. Great colors and lines that actually have something to do with the body design. Too bad the colors weren’t carried over into the interior. With those two big dash gauges and all of that burgundy velour, one might think they’re looking inside a ‘76 Dodge Tradesman!

Compared to some of the over-the-top Corvettes seen here recently, this is actually kind of cool. I like it. Another seller using the Crazy Eddie Price Guide, but they can always lower the price when it is still for sale a year from now.

The price is crack pipe high, but like it or not it’s a fantastic snapshot of the 1980’s that should be preserved: without a knowledge of history we’re doomed to repeat it!

A full scale Hot Wheels car, it represents the custom Vette genre very well…built for car shows and magazine center-folds.

Either 70s or 80s, I can see that in a magazine with a guy with a porno mustache a girl in a slinky polyester dress and perhaps a cigarette ad, maybe in Playboy. Ah, youth.

For me, this kind of 80’s customizing is the only thing that keeps these Corvettes from being totally boring…

No way this is 80’s style custom work. This style began in the early 70’s and although it continued for a few diehards into the early 80’s this is 70’s style interior and paintwork all the way.

T Mel: My thoughts EXACTLY. As I was reading all of this 80’s bashing, I kept thinking… This is 70’s style all the way. While it may have been finished in 1980, it was all 1970’s style. Think pimped out Eldorado’s, Full Size Shag vans, Kit cars, and Custom Car Shows — Think the Pink Panther mobile and Custom Hot Wheels. That was my early youth and that was the 70’s through the end of the disco era (roughly 1980-81). But, By 1982-83, this type of thing was already way out of style.

So the headline should really say… “The seventies called and they want their car back” or even… “The disco called and they want their car back”.

The 80’s cars would be cheaply built, boxy, underpowered, sharp edged down-sized cars like GM Xcars, Mopar K cars, Knight Riders, Iroc Z’s, Fiero’s, maybe a Delorean or Ferrari 308. But not this John Travolta disco era styled, plush overdone, car show queen.
