Essentially one of the marquee tuner cars of the 1980s and 90s, Callaway’s name became synonymous with monster Vettes once they began making the sort of upgrades many enthusiasts wish had come from the factory. While the C4 Corvette has many detractors, the Callaway affiliation attempted to correct some of the complaints it generated. With annual production typically under 200 units and performance upgrades that pushed power to the range of 345 b.h.p. and 465 lb.-ft. of torque, the Callaway editions promised both a better driving experience and far higher levels of exclusivity. This example is number 157 out of 184 cars for 1987.

While Callaway was well-known for developing aftermarket turbocharging kits, the C4 Corvette actually allowed consumers to waltz down to their local Chevy dealer and check a box authorizing the twin turbo upgrade, all while covered under the factory warranty. That’s just amazing, when you think about it, and a great opportunity for Corvette enthusiasts to get the kind of performance they expected out of the C4 with the security of manufacturer support.

This particular car is a convertible model with the preferred manual transmission. The seller notes he purchased it out of an estate sale, which makes me wonder if it was just listed as an ordinary Corvette convertible by the manager of the estate (and not a Callaway-modified example). While these tuner-built Corvettes aren’t hugely valuable at the moment, they represent tremendous value given the performance offered by one of the foremost names in turbocharging.
