In the mid-1970s, General Motors partnered with Chinook, an RV manufacturer, to create a camping edition of the Chevy Blazer and GMC Jimmy. A fixed camping unit was added behind the cab that would be perfect for weekend wilderness adventures. Only 1,780 were built in 1976 and 1977 and the seller’s example is said to be #495. While it runs, it needs a restoration – and comes with another Blazer for parts or to rebuild, too. Located in Jerome, Idaho, these SUVs are available as a package deal for $6,500 here on Facebook Marketplace.
The K5 Blazer began in 1969 as a full-size sport utility vehicle that would be replaced by the Chevy Tahoe in 1995. For a time, GMC had a corresponding product in the Jimmy, which itself was replaced by the Yukon (badge variants). The Blazer and Jimmy were based on short-wheelbase trucks and could be had with either RWD or 4WD. In 1976, a partnership with Chinook was struck up to go hiking by adding a step-through camper (no access from the cab) that was a permanent fixture on the back. They were sold as the Blazer Chalet at Chevy dealers and the Jimmy Casa Grande at GMC.
Considering the low production numbers, the surviving population of these campers is likely small. The featured ’76 Chalet is equipped with a 400 cubic inch V8 (small-block) paired with an automatic transmission (TH-350 or TH-400?). While it runs and drives and the sleeping accommodations look okay, we’re told the Chalet needs a restoration. It has rust but is said to be complete.
To sweeten the deal, the seller is throwing in another Blazer from the same era that may have less corrosion. The interior is in rough condition and no mention is made of its mechanical health. So perhaps you’ll get two Blazers that need an extreme makeover or maybe the “regular” Blazer has parts to help the Chalet Blazer. It’s a package deal with trades considered (dealer?).
