2 Owner T-tops: 1980 Pontiac Formula

This 1980 Pontiac Firebird Formula is located in Louisville, Kentucky. It is a project and shows some neglect but it is reported to be a 2 owner car that when restored would look sharp. The car is listed here on eBay with 24 days remaining in the auction. The Buy It Now Price is $6,800 but the owner is willing to consider best offers. The price seems a little rich to me for the amount of work needed. Pontiac offered several models of the Firebird including the Esprit, Formula and Trans Am. This is the Formula model which could be equipped with the same performance features as the Trans Am but in a more subtle package.

Pontiac offered the 301 cubic inch V8 engine in 1980 and buyers could order the optional turbocharged 301 cubic inch V8 engine. They were not the same engine in many respects. The base 301 cubic inch V8 was more of an economy minded engine that was built to reduce weight and improve gas mileage. Pontiac rated the 4 barrel version of this engine at 155 horsepower. The turbo 301 cubic inch V8 had a reinforced block, crank and rods and was rated at 210 horsepower. It was actually around 170 horsepower.

This car has the deluxe interior which came with the upgraded hobnail seat covers and different door panels. I am not sure the blue hobnail cloth is available anymore. This car is fairly well optioned with an automatic transmission, electric windows, air conditioning and T-Tops.  Based on the wheels on this car, this Formula was not ordered with the WS6 Performance Handling Package because it would have 15×8 snowflake instead of 15×7 Rally II wheels.

The seller states that he was able to get the car running. The odometer reads 89,661 but the rear springs appear to have given out because it is sitting low in the back of the car. The windshield has a big crack across it but that can be fixed fairly easy. The seller states that he has the original manuals that came with the car and has tracked down the original owner.
