Ford’s hugely successful “pony” car, the Mustang, got its first serious competitor in 1967 in the form of the Chevrolet Camaro. The latest Chevy would put a crimp in the Mustang’s dominance and sell quite well during its first generation, 1967-69. The cars were little changed in 1968, with small differences like the absence of side vent windows. This ’68 Camaro has had only two owners and still runs at more than a quarter million miles. But it needs restoring and currently resides in Concord, California. The Bow-Tie is available here on eBay where the reserve is unmet at $8,100 and the take-it-home today price is $31,500.
This 1968 Camaro has been in California all its life, beginning with its manufacture in Van Nuys, The car has changed hands only once in 1972, so the seller has owned the auto for the past 50 years. Like a Timex watch, it takes a licking and keeps on ticking. The 327 cubic inch V8 was rebuilt at 140,000 miles and the original 3-speed manual was replaced by a 4-speed in the 1980s. At 259,000 miles now, the Chevy has a current registration and is still a driver. But things have gotten tired and it’s due for a refresh, mostly cosmetically.
To help with the project, the seller has amassed a collection of parts, many of which are still new in their boxes. The list includes, but is not limited to, door panels, headliner, dash panels, A-pillar covers, parcel shelf cover, grille, suspension parts, and much more. Years ago, one of the rear quarter panels was damaged in an accident and repaired, and it may need to be revisited. Rust is said to be at a minimum, which will help greatly in putting the Chevy back on the right track.
As far as the restoration prospects go for this Camaro, it’s one of the better originals we’ve seen lately. But with it comes a healthy price tag. You could spend $30k just to have a baseline and as a finished product, it won’t be an SS, RS, or Z28. If you’re not in hurry to get started, you could drive it for a while as the car runs well and the brakes and tires are more than acceptable.
There are much nicer ones for much less than this one here.
$31,500 !!! Seller is smoking some premium product.
Well,it IS legal there.
Well…..you can always go down…lol
New trend in automotive values….drive it for 50 years, then retire off it…
or…let it rust until it dissolves,… then retire off it…
…a fool and his money are soon parted…
God love Western dry states where you can drive a car for 50 years and it still looks, like, well: a CAR! I guess the bidding is going to tell us what it’s worth(?) A very restorable old beater Camaro………
And yes, I would gladly drive thousands of miles to pick up my rust free restorable vs a midwest Swiss cheese special……
Or a completely rusted away car from the East Coast ! Cars looked worse than this when they were 10 years old there, if they were still on the road
I’d go 8k, not twice that…let alone 4x !
Life’s too short!
Be fun to redo the interior though, & then drive as is!
Price higher than giraffes behind, but get it running and brakes sorted out put some cragers on it drive heck out of it.
You know the drill anything a mouse can do a rat does better! 396 , 427 or 454 all get my vote
I like the cut of your jib!
Very full gas tank, according to the gage.
Is it full of gas or stinken varnish just asking it happens
At $31,500 there should be at least 3 Camaros in this deal
No Camaro of this vintage needing a complete resto is worth that much, 7k – 8k in this market MAX. ridiculous! If we want to save the hobby it needs to be affordable to the younger generation. My first car was a 1967 Camaro and wish I could buy another, but at 58 years young I can’t afford one anymore!
Most of today’s younger drivers(can’t even be many of those – how many even have a driver’s license even at age 24, let alone 16!?) do NOT want cars with TWO doors, crank windows, no a/c or video screens, no cruise control, a trunk lid that doesnt go all the way down to the bumper, manual drum brakes, & much less – a manual transmission! & much less, have the TIME to do a restoration or even simple mainenance!! – being on the phone all day & night – when was the last time you saw a young person waxing dad’s car? I can’t even find turtle wax liquid wax in stores anymore!
All they want is the most expensive phone to scroll up & down with all day & night, & someone older to drive them around – they dont even go to the mall much & in my area, i can remember at least 25 nightclubs in the ’80s within a 10 miles radius of my house – ALL!!! now demolished, or a church, or a restaurant or a 7-11 or a parking lot!
Hmmm…buy a car and drive it for 55 years and 300,000 miles and attempt to sell it for the price of a new one?!
Ever hear about that term called depreciation?
Oh and I forgot to ask if that mileage is verified?
Comes with a hitch, too!
Looks like good project for a hands on guy it worth about 15k in its condition.
Well this is a great story, drive it that many miles for 50 years.
The only greater story i would want to hear is the guy who has the Lt1 or 300hp that changed the oil and has yet to rebuild it. And his car too is warn down to the primer. The chevy v8 smallblock quite an engine, Yes the 289 and 318 are as well.
As far as the price , its all the traffic will bare. Its a lesson i have to keep relearning as the older crowd paid 10 percent or less for this or better shape , way back.
Ridiculous, I can’t believe some of the insane prices people are asking and people are willing to shell out . Once again “Ridiculous”
When you own a car that long you don’t want to sell it for less than you love it for. I would buy it and drive the eff out of it if I were able to. That thing is a survivor, wearing it’s scars with pride. I think it’s beautiful.
My heart leaped when I saw this, my dad was on that assembly line.
Had 8 of the 68’s at the same time back in mi 70’s 5 were redone a convertible SS ,a big block and 3 327’s with auto. The beater I drove was T boned behind the passenger door only paid 50 bucks for it, stuck a piece of paneling in the window and drove it for 10 years. When the front end got weak pulled the 327 and put it in a friends convertible ,and today its still running strong.Sold them all in 86 and bought a house with the money Divorce forced the sale LOL
My go to, 1st gen Camaro guy wouldn’t be surprised if this car changes hands in the low $20k + range, the market is a bit hot today, he expects Z28 ones to hang on, the run of the mill , like this, how ever are due for a fall. He is selling 2 projects, base V-8’s, to clear the decks before the storm hits. Several ” on the ball” guys and shops I deal with are getting ready to unload inventory right after first of year, should be interesting.
Are you sure about the 250000 miles? Could have had another 100000 in this condition.
