29k Mile Notchback: 1990 Ford Mustang LX

Update 7/13/20 – This sweet Mustang has popped up here on eBay with no reserve! How high will it go?

From 7/9/20 – It’s impressive when one owner keeps a car in time-warp condition; it’s even more so when the tradition continues among subsequent owners, as this 1990 Ford Mustang LX notchback survivor goes to show. This two-owner specimen has under 30,000 original miles and features the original window sticker and a host of other details that have long since been lost on most Fox bodies by now. It has an automatic transmission, functional A/C, and the original 10-hole wheels are included with the sale. Find the Mustang here on craigslist with 29,000 original miles and an asking price of $21,000, located in Chico, California.

The notchback coupe is a car I still hope to own someday, albeit in slightly less preserved condition and with a five-speed manual transmission. Still, this is the car you put away for safe-keeping, only rolling it out to the occasional show – a lifestyle decision, if you will, as you can’t drive it in anger, but you still get plenty of high-fives and backslaps for bringing such a special car out for everyone to enjoy. The pony wheels are a common upgrade, and one that I personally don’t love – still, the original wheels are included and still mounted on their original tires. While the paint looks perfect from this distance, the seller does note that there are imperfections despite the low mileage, including some stains from bird droppings.

The Mustang wears very in-period colors, with red carpeting, red bucket seats, red seatbelts, and more red, everywhere you look. The good news is that every surface seemingly remains in great condition, color scheme notwithstanding. The seller notes he just unloaded a fair chunk of change to get the A/C sorted out, which is a nice change of pace from the usual tale of woe we see about just needing a charge. In fact, the seller notes he spent $2,100 installing a new compressor, dryer, condenser, and high and low pressure lines. It’s so refreshing to see a seller who has actually spelled out why it’s such a bunch of baloney to say the A/C just needs a re-charge; no, it’s an expensive fix most sellers are too cheap to address.

The engine bay is a bit grungier than I was expecting, or perhaps it’s just bad lighting. There’s obviously no sign of modifications, but it’s also not particularly well detailed. Still, it’s a small critique of an otherwise extremely clean car. The seller notes he has only put about 1,000 miles on the Mustang since he acquired it, and that he’s letting it go to move other projects forward. The market for clean Fox bodies continues to appreciate, and examples like this one will continue to be cherished as long as subsequent owners treat it as reverently as the first two have. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Pat L. for the find.

Very nice Fox Body. I think Jeff has nailed the analysis: you have to like red; great that the a/c system has been redone; original paperwork is a plus; the chrome pony wheels look good but are everywhere; lots of people prefer a manual transmission; honest description. It even has the typical saggy map pockets and missing door striker bushings. Too bad about the paint flaws.

Clean Fox Bodies are appreciating rapidly, but this asking price might be optimistic.

Everything in California has the slightly higher price tag or so it seems. He may just get it, never hurts to ask.

There is often a good reason for that. When you car take apart a 60’s or early 70’s car that’s spent most of its life parked on the street or in a driveway with basic hand tools you will know why.

There’s nothing special about this car, and the two owners that bought it really missed an opportunity to go out and have fun with it. At least as much fun as you can have in a bone stock automatic 5 litre. I feel bad for them, and good luck getting the ask for it.

I`m thinking somewhere in the 12—-$14.000 range.

If I buy a Fox-body, it’ll be a hatchback with a 5-speed. Though the featured car looks to be in good shape, I can’t see it bringing that sort of money.

My sentiments exactly. No hatch, no stick, no deal. Never was a fan of the notch. Reminds me of a Chrysler K car.

If this was bought for significantly less than the “asking price”, then followed by some time spent under the hood cleaning and upgrading(?) this would make a very nice driver.

I could see this car getting close to the asking price if it was equipped with a manual.

I can’t remember the last time I saw someone running 10 hole wheels on their 5.0. These pony wheels are becoming a bit too common.

I sold my ’91 five years ago for $12K but it’s was far from stock. I had put a lot of money into it. Part of the money was for a supercharged 351 Windsor with a Tremec 6 speed.

Oh well, too late now. 🙄

Seems like last year the 93 Cobra was bring high twenties. This price seems high to me but I’m not in the market either.

Back in the eighties and nineties everyone wanted a notch back mustang because they were more ridged and less made. But they still were only 225 HP at their peak and no different than their fast back brethren mechanically. Fast forward to 2020, these cars have nothing on what is produced now days in quality and performance. The notch back 5.0 had their day but in my book not worth the $$$ people are asking for them today, especially an automatic. Lastly the green Boss 302 1970 mustang posted on Barnfinds earlier today is WORTH THE MONEY!

Keith, you do realize that the 90 5.0 ( 5 spd ) was quicker and handled better than it 1970 Boss 302 brethren ?.

Sorry Charlie. I wouldn’t pay that kind of money for it. I’ve got a 90 lx hatchback 5spd, and paid so much less for it. Even though it’s not a 5.0; boo hoo, It’s a turbo 2.3, and I drive it every now for fun.

We know that the seller is looking for something around $21K, so if it doesn’t get close to that, my prediction is that we see another “Listing was ended early because of an error” or that “The item is no longer available”.

I gotta tip my hat to this car, and the insurance friendly LX, the 5.0 was the first car to come and have some balls, for a long time, it’s the car that brought muscle back, in a smaller dimension motor, without this car gentleman, people would still be oohing and ahhing over the stickers on a MonteCarlo SS

That credit actually goes to the 82 Mustang GT and the arms race with the Camaro/Firebird that followed.

    It’s an AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION!

More than HALF the buyer’s out there for a nice notch coupe Foxbody will not even consider this car due to the transmission.

Never heard ANYBODY brag about a:

    “Fuel Injected 5.0 Automatic”

    It’s ALWAYS a “Fuel Injected 5.0 5 Speed”!

A “Stick” makes all the difference in the world.

Yes the seller will sell the car however that buyer will have settle for an Automatic!

That car would sell for $5K MORE IF IT WERE A STICK!
