30-Year Garage Find: 1966 Ford Mustang

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The first iteration of the Ford Mustang (1964 to 1966) had some of the highest production numbers ever for an American car. Nearly 1.3 million copies of the little “pony” were built across 30 months, meaning the assembly line workers probably never got any rest. This 1966 edition’s VIN decodes as a rather ordinary Mustang with a 289 cubic inch V8, but it has emerged through an estate where it sat in a garage for some three decades. Located in Hesperia, California, this Ford is available here on Barn Finds Classifieds where it may go for less than the $7,750 asking price.

In 1966, more than 607,000 copies of the Mustang saw the light of day. Besides the C-code 289 engine (2-barrel carburetor), the car has an automatic transmission, power steering, and an AM radio (and maybe not a lot more). If the automobile has been off the road since the mid-1990s, then it took about 25 to 30 years to log the nearly 95,000 miles that show on the odometer. The seller (BidFirstandLast) thinks it could be a one-owner machine.

Why this Mustang was retired and left to collect dirt and dust is unknown. It was running in 1988 when the car was last serviced at just 400 miles before the current odometer reading. We don’t know when the owner passed away, but the keys are missing and will be sold based on a duplicate title being provided once the application has been processed. The car may have been last purchased at Citrus Motors in Ontario, California given the metal frame around the black CA license plates.

All four tires are flat, so loading this vehicle onto a flatbed may be challenging. And the passenger side door is frozen shut for some reason that will need to be sorted out. Much of this Ford may be original, including the interior for which the back seat upholstery might be salvaged. Since the car is also here on BidFastandLast, it will be sold at auction even if it’s below the $7,750 asking price.

I can smell the mildew and mouse urine from here. With the 4 flat tires I can see why he didn’t want to haul it out and hose it down, but still…

It’s actually a very sad picture there IMO. The left over remnants of somebody’s life. The wheel chair shown on the left helps to paint a picture of what may have unfolded in this unknown persons life..They aged out and this is what’s left. RIP…..
    The car will sell .

That’s pretty observant of you. It is sad. I know if I kicked the bucket today. My car in the backyard would be in a similar situation.

The car on the other hand looks very interesting. From what few pictures there are, at least the top side shows minimal rust. I wonder what the chassis looks like? The interior needs work for sure, but if the underside looks rust free, this could be a very good deal for somebody.

I sell bank foreclosures and lately reverse mortgage foreclosures. Every one is like this. No classic cars yet but plenty of run of the mill veeks and even a few boats. Along with bowling trophies, Freemason paraphernalia et. al.

I would not buy this until I see the duplicate title and, all the correct estate paperwork.

The picture nearly made me cry. My best friend in high school received a ’65 or ’66 (can’t remember for sure which one) as a graduation present. It was baby blue with a white convertible top and white leather seats. Unfortunately, she died in a car accident in 1975. I’m not sure what happened to the car, but it sure was a beauty. I hope someone decides to restore this, but I don’t know if it would be worth the time, effort or money.

A friend bought one new in 1966. The sticker price with 6 cyl 3 speed manual was only $2368. Fun car to drive !

Poor car, I bet they would gladly give you all the crap in the garage too if you bought the car and wanted it.
