30 Years in Storage! 1967 Rambler Rebel 550

AMC and Rambler fans unite! This 1967 Rambler Rebel 550 is a somewhat rare two-door post and it’s listed on eBay with a current bid price of $3,035. There is a Buy It Now price of $4,500. I know that $1,500 is a lot of money, but if I really, really wanted this car I wouldn’t wait for the end of the auction, I’ve lost too many vehicles that way. This car is in Sacramento, California.

The 1967 Rebels were actually Ramblers and weren’t officially badged as AMCs. Although, they were Rambler Rebels by American Motors. 1967 was the first year of a total redesign for the Rebel and being two-inches longer and four-inches wider, it follows the current trend of making every redesign a little bigger. This is the base 550 model with a slim B-pillar giving it almost the look of a hardtop. The 770 was the next level up and two-door hardtops could be ordered in the SST line.

This car has been in storage for 30 years! They mention that the color is yellow but I see white, maybe it’s just totally washed out from the beautiful Sacramento sun. It must be Apollo Yellow which is about as close to being white as it gets. This car has no rust, according to the seller, but there are definitely things to do on it. The front bumper needs a good deep-tissue massage, or maybe a replacement if you can find one. There are a few dents and dings, but no rust is no rust and that’s the best news for almost any person looking for an old car!

The interior, from the two photos shown, looks pretty good. Being in storage for so long, there’s always a chance that mice have gotten into things, but it looks good in there. The dash doesn’t look cracked and the door panel and seats look good from basically the one photo that shows them. This is a new steering column that’s meant to collapse in the event of a front crash. The 1967 AMC models also offered two-year/24,000 mile comprehensive warranty and a five-year/50,000 mile drivetrain warranty!

This is definitely a V8, but which V8 I’m not sure and the seller doesn’t fill us in on that. Is this a 290, a 343, or a 390 V8? I’m guessing that it’s the base V8, a 290 with around 200 hp, being that it’s in a base 550 series car, but one of you will know by looking at it. This car runs and drives and it looks like it could be a nice project. The no-rust part is the biggest thing for me, almost anything after that can be taken care of while a person tinkers with a vehicle in their spare time. The 1966 Rebels are my favorite but I wouldn’t kick a ’67  Rambler Rebel out of the garage. How about you?

Cool find. The engine size is on the badge on the front fender, but I can’t quite make it out. It can’t be the 390, as that came out in ’68. When at the AMC reunion a few years back, the swap area had all kinds of parts for these. These were good cars and I’m sure, at some gathering, IF any young people were there, they may say, “What’s a Rambler?”

Yup and then someone older says it’s an AMC like a Gremlin or Pacer.

I’m guessing 290 because only a few options are on the car…power steering and a radio.wheel covers… Has a rubber floor and vacuum wipers.

It does look like a hardtop at first glance. I’ll bet that bumper (bent by bad placement of a tow hook) can be straightened and polished.
