350 V8 With Mods: 1964 Chevrolet Impala

From the time the Impala joined the Chevy line-up in the late 1950s, it would be the car maker’s biggest seller for years to come. Its combination of good looks, creature comforts, and – in some cases –  performance appealed to a lot of car buyers. The third generation of the marque included the 1964 models which had a more squared-off appearance than the year before. This Impala Sports Coupe has been parked for the last 10 years due to a faulty transmission. But it received a modified 350 V8 before going into hibernation. The Super Sport was a popular option on the Impala after 1962 and later became a series of its own. But the “regular” Impala, like the seller’s car, would outsell it by more than 4 to 1 or 422,292 sports coupes alone in 1964. The VIN on this car indicates that it left the factory with a V8 engine, which could have more commonly been a 283 or 327 small block. However, that engine was replaced by a later model 350 cubic inch motor at least a decade ago.

We’re told the powerplant in this car has less than 20,000 miles on it, although the whole car sits at more than 136,000. The 350 was treated to 202 heads, dual-quad Edelbrock manifold with a 650 CFM quad-carburetor, and a performance camshaft, also from Edelbrock. What was likely the original 2-speed Powerglide automatic is still there but won’t shift into high gear, which is why the car was parked many moons ago.

This Chevrolet wears some very faded black paint or primer and several years’ worth of dust and dirt. We’re told the car has been garaged the entire time, so that has helped preserve what’s here. The seller says the body is solid except for a touch of rust on the lower right rear quarter panel. It’s said to be a complete car, but some of the brightwork up front and one headlight are missing and are perhaps situated in the trunk. Besides attending to the ills of the tranny, all the usual stuff you would change after 10 years needs to be on the to-do list. Like a battery, tires, belts, and hoses, all the fluids, and perhaps some attention to the fuel system including the carb.

The Old Cars Report Price Guide was cited for this car being a Condition 4 automobile. That would make it “good” with minor work needed to be functional again. To get to “excellent” would require a restoration although the car could be used “as-is” with repairs. That sounds reasonable given what Conditions 5 and 6 are like.

      That’s a 4bbl Holley single feed carb with side hung float bowl’s probably 585 to 650 CFM I’ve had a few of those
