At first glance, you might think the seller’s Sport Coupe is the top-line Malibu, but it’s not. The VIN indicates is the entry-level Chevelle “Standard” which was produced in much smaller numbers. It’s a sharp-looking car that’s either a beautiful original or a well-done restoration. As the seller is a dealer, that information is not provided yet the odometer reading is said to be just 36,000 miles. Located in Lisle, Illinois, this sweet Chevelle is available here on eBay for the advertised price of $44,988, which is in Malibu or SS territory.
When I first started looking at the photos, I was trying to find some Malibu badging but had no luck. Then I noticed the rubber floor mats inside the car, which told me I was going down the wrong path. Chevrolet built 301,878 Malibu Sport Coupes (Series 3637) in 1970 along with just 14,122 “Standard” Sport Coupes (Series 3437, as per the VIN on the seller’s car). And if you eliminated those with an inline-6 motor, the latter number falls to 8,003. Not exactly rare territory, but far less plentiful than Malibu’s or Super Sports.
The Rally wheels with raised white letter tires don’t make it look like a basic Chevelle, nor do the black stripes on the hood and trunk, a trait of the SS 396 or 454. This Chevy sports the entry-level 307 cubic-inch V8 that was rated at 200 hp with a 2-barrel carburetor, the only fuel delivery choice. The seller says this car has a 3-speed automatic, but the gear shift indicator looks exactly like the one I had in my 1970 Nova and that car had a 2-speed Powerglide, also common with the 307.
This Chevrolet presents as flawless from what I can tell. The Green Mist paint shines nicely and could either be original or a well-done respray. At 36,000 miles, this car has been babied for the past 52 years and perhaps only driven by a spirited Grandma to church on Sundays (note the dual exhaust tips). At a traffic light, this car won’t be beating a Mustang Boss 429 off the line but will pass the Boss at the first gas station along the way. It might not be fast, but its condition and originality will make it stand out from a sea of fake SS 396s.
the 3spd manual was standard tranny on 6cyl and smallblock with the powerglide an turbo350 optional….you would probly need to order the 3spd manual though as chevy knew people that wanted a 6cyl or 307 weren’t likely to want to shift themselves plus automatic being an option made the bean counters happy. I did have 68 chevelle ss396 conv with a 3 spd stick… a dentist next town over bought it new with the 3spd, whether he ordered it like that or bought it off the lot I dont know.
There was a three speed SS396 Chevelle in our town, the guy’s wife said that he could buy any car he wanted, but no 4 speeds.
These cars look beautiful in that lime green – but not the interior!
Powerglide
45 grand for a green 307, Powerglide “standard” Chevelle?
Let the insanity continue…
This was the car I was looking for back in 2002.
You lost me at 307….
That’s nice, last of the dependable Chevrolet one of the few I would consider owning but I would take the time to go see it in person and get it on a lift to see underneath before bidding
Deak your lucky to have a V/8 in a base bare bone Chevelle…..what were you expecting a hemi ?
Not sure why you would spend that type of money for a more or less standard car. That price range would buy you a true SS with continued upward mobility.
307 power glide green taxi interior Chevelle, this guy has high hopes
That non-angle plug 307 is a DOG. Add that hideous avocado green interior, auto on column, repaint to a dark green, ahh fuggetit. This guys dream price is just that. PASS
“That non-angle plug 307 is a DOG.”
Show me any small block that came factory installed in a car with angle plug heads!
Danny I agree with you 100% even though it’s a beautiful Chevelle no matter what the Deaks have to whine about. I don’t the carpet color, I don’t like the seat color, I don’t like the trunk mat, I don’t like the 307, I don’t like the body color, I don’t like the transmission, I don’t like the gear selector. This is a nice Chevelle that I would have no problem driving come nice summer days. The Deaks will never enjoy going to cars and Coffee in a car cool enough to be part of the show. They’ll park their civic across the road, and every car owner they come in contact with they’ll say ” I had one just like it”. When they leave the car show in 1970 you hear em mumble about their 1962 Falcon 4dr sedan. I could had a V/8.
Basically a nice appearing car, but $45k with a 307/PG no AC, cloth interior??? It would present better without the faux hood/deck stripes, and please, please ditch the yellow plug wires!
The car is way over priced.
I mean a base car with a hmmm green inside and out to boot..
The engine looks nice though…
This one sold at the 2020 Mecum Fall Indy auction, lot # F8 for $28,600. Showed up shortly afterwards for sale by this same dealer on ebay for $49,000. He has apparently dropped the price down about $4000 since then. After being for sale for over 16 months, its fair to say that the market has spoken and this car is way overpriced, as others have noted.
