390 Project! 1967 Ford Mustang

Some classics survive decades of ownership and use while barely changing, enduring minimal changes or signs of wear and tear. Others progress through chapters of life from pampered new chariot to rough-ridden high school beater to “that old car in the barn.” This 1967 Mustang Fastback 2+2 in Memphis, Tennessee clearly has a story to tell, and another chapter or two left to be written. Described here on eBay as an “original” California car, the bone white pony reportedly left the factory wearing Acapulco Blue paint and a black interior. A grainy depiction of a framed Marti report in no way contributes value or useful information. Despite a spartan description, at least eight bidders have rolled the dice, elevating the Mustang’s market value beyond $12,000.

Behold what might have once been a functioning 390 cid (6.4L) V8. Ratchet straps as a structural element curtail optimism and punctuate the effort needed to make this once potent pony-car a functioning vehicle. With no comment on the motor’s originality and running or turning condition, only a close inspection or conversation with the seller could brand the engine as anything but a paperweight.

A reasonably complete (albeit rough and faded) interior retains many shiny bits that can be costly to replace. The console and gauge cluster hint at the car’s original sporty interior styling.

One picture in the listing shows a garden hose on the tarmac beside the car. So close! For sellers unfamiliar with a water hose, a valve can be opened in such a way that water flows through the flexible hose and emerges from the far end. That water, applied for five minutes or less, can actually remove dust from vehicles, letting potential buyers better understand what they are buying and increasing your profit. In other news, unless a wide-angle lens was used, it looks like the rear bumper is pushed in.

Photos by Manute Bol give an obtuse drone’s-eye view of the dusty classic. There’s no denying the appeal of the early fastback Mustang, even before a certain movie car elevated values of all such vehicles. Would you take a chance on this faded Pony?

    The ebay photos show the right leaf spring and shackle poking through the floor into the trunk. Did a Mustang come with a two barrel 390? IDTS

      Don’t know about the Mustang, but a 390 could be had with 2 barrels. My ’66 Galaxie did, very nice running engine too.

      The only 390 listed as being available for the 67-68 Mustang was the S-code 4bbl.

        There was a X code 390 that was a 2 barrel that was available in 68 not sure about 67.

    Original Calif. car! Must have parked it on the Salty Beach at low tide and watched the high tide wash it daily! A lot of $$$$ to pay for a vin #/parts car. My last drag car was a 65 2+2 with a 289. Even it came stock with a 4 barrel carb.

    Sorry folks, but there is a good reason someone invented the word junk and this car is one of them. Can’t imagine why leaving the engine in this condition merits the kind of money displayed. This car was ignored a long time ago and will take more money than it’s ever going to be worth to overcome that.

    1968 Mustangs were available with a 390 2bbl. They had a X in the vin as opposed to the S. Only a handful were built IIRC. I own a 67 small block fastback and have done a lot of reading on the 67-68’s over the years.

    $20,000.00 bid already & the reserve hasn’t been met!!! Holy cats, please look closely at this white whale, rear wheel wells modified with clear evidence of corrosion there, looking at the ripples and bumps on fenders, doors, rockers, bondo is evident, or possibly the car has a case of the mumps. Come on! Look at the engine compartment, clear evidence that that part of the car was either submerged in water or did a nose dive into a pile of road salt. Look at the shock absorber towers on either side of the engine, they are a mess. You couldn’t bolt anything up to that bad metal. I would like to see some clear photos of the underside of this car. But would need a tetanus shot first. The buyer needs to have some deep pockets to put this car back in shape.

    JR you are correct, leaf spring & shackle poking thru the floor! Engine & doors held with ratchet straps, I’m betting there’s nothing left of the underside of this car & anybody that bids on this without a visual inspection is probably gonna regret it! I love the 67/68 stang fast backs but this one is rotten to the core!

    That is not the original 390 sitting in the engine bay. The VIN code clearly states an S code engine which was the 4 barrel version with chrome valve covers. This engine has neither. Looks like a clapped out truck engine. This car will need everything to be restored, it’s probably better to be used as a parts car. No way is it worth 12k!
