390 V8 Fastback: 1967 Ford Mustang

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The popular Ford Mustang got it’s first restyle in 1967 after 1.2 million copies had been sold the prior 2 ½ years. That would have included this fastback which is said to have the S-code 390 cubic inch V8 under the hood. An original car that was last driven in 2003, it awaits a new owner in Reseda, California. Likely stored for the past two decades, it’s available here on craigslist for $100,000 OBO. Thanks, for the tip, rex m!

S-code Mustangs were powerful cars, but 28,000 of them were built in all body styles in 1967. So, it’s not exactly a rare car today. The seller says this one has a Top Loader 4-speed manual transmission, and the Ford was built and sold in California. We’re told it’s an original car that’s been in mothballs for ages, but the seller only comes up with one photo. The second pic is an example of what it might look like once restored. But it may take up to six figures just to get started.

A bit of good information in the ad, but…. one picture? All that for a cool $100k?

Maybe 20 years ago. Figure $25-30k at a minimum, if it’s an unmolested California car that’s been sitting in a Southern California garage for a couple of decades.

One crappy picture, no details about the condition of the paint, interior or the motor and trans. And it’s been sitting for almost 20 years so probably a good bit of work and money needed to get it back on the road again. The seller wants $100K? I’ll pass.

We’ll, see the bullet mustang sold for a major amount of money. Some green paint some torque thrust wheels and ta – da!! Some auctions are killing this hobby.

Yep, it’s been killed. The housing market as well. Who would have thought the days of buying an old house dirt cheap to fix up or buying basically any classic car would be over and now just a dream for most. The rare instances where this a bargain, it gets snatched up by greedy flippers.

I think the decimal point is in the wrong position.
It needs to be moved over to the left a couple of spots.
One crappy picture for a $100K car.

This has to be a joke !!!!

      A joke indeed !,
a throw it at the wall and see if it sticks..
Considering one can buy a mint/restored one for the same price and this one needs unknown amounts of lot of work
I love ‘BarnFinds’ but this one doesnt deserve to be post ped on here.
To the sellers defense, it is a OBO
and ive bought cars almost half of asking price, sooo
someone offer the seller the 35-40 its likely worth and maybe get a green, big block, four speed, fast back in your ‘barn’

I find it laughable that a fastback with a 390 is the holy grail in the 68 Mustang, but a 69 Mach1 with a 390 is considered weak and you must have a 428 CJ or SCJ.

You can find an excellent 69 with a 390 and toploader for ~$60K.

Story goes that this Mustang was Steve McQueen’s sister’s friend’s neighbor’s tailor’s dog walker’s personal car. But Im gonna have to wait until the seller can confirm this before I look at the ad again.

I had one in blue in 1968. The vehicle got hit in the rear and drove me into a fire hydrant one winter night. I waited for the insurance check and purchased a brand new 1969 Corvette coupe Silver/red 4 speed 350hp. The end of my Ford days.

    Never forget:

There is an ass for every seat!

All it takes is one well heeled looker to send a message asking for detailed photos, and the negotiation begins. From there, anything is possible.
For you guys 100K is unthinkable, but for real collector/builders, this is an opportunity.
    Have fun

Maybe someday when I grow up I can be a serious business car collector and drop $100k on a pos like this for the opportunity to dump another $50-$75k into it.

I am a huge fan of the 1960s Mustangs and at age 52, someday I will own one but certainly not at today’s inflated prices during an inflationary bubble fueled by low interest rates and speculative investing. But is it just me or are there always ones for sale whether project state or finished driver quality? Add the high production numbers for 1960s Mustangs. Throw in the availablity of replacement parts from small items to entire new body shells. Using simple economic theory of supply and demand then one easily realizes that current Mustang prices are inflated by deep pocketed or penny foolish buyers. So for the time being I will sit on the sidelines watching others take the beatings to their finances while I await to come into the end of the game to seal my victory. And I am sure I am not alone in this game plan as many of us have seen this game before and now know the winning formula.

I’ve owned a couple 67 Mustangs. They’re fun, light little cars. My experience with these dates back 25-30 years, so the $500 I paid for one and the $1,500 I paid for the other is but a distant memory. I can’t imagine being so wealthy that I could throw a hundred grand at a car as a starting point. Tax, shipping, insurance and storage increase the price tag. And, EVERYTHING ELSE in your world (re$idence, employment, investments, kid’s education, retirement, daily driver . . .) would need to be in good order and paid up before making a “frivolous” expenditure on a toy. . . May be just a shadow, but it looks as though there might be some damage to the right front. ~S

Good luck to him. If he can get it or close, wtf not! We already look back at 40-50k prices and moan that used to pricey… which would now be CHEAP!! Now look at collector car prices – Deal with it.
