390-Powered 1968 Ford Galaxie 500 Survivor

The Galaxie 500 was the mainstay of the Ford lineup for much of the 1960s. That is until the Mustang came along in 1965, but it targeted different buyers. Though the introduction of the luxury LTD (also in ’65) may have cut into sales a bit, more than 734,000 Galaxie’s still rolled off the assembly line in ’68. Including this 4-door hardtop with a 390 V8 which looks to be an original car. Given its condition, the Ford still looks to be making the local car show rotation in Indianapolis, Indiana. It’s available here on Facebook Marketplace for a reasonable $4,500. A nod to Kenneth Athon for sending this tip our way!

For 1968, the full-size Fords were easily identified compared to the ‘67s because they had gone back to dual horizontal headlights instead of the stacked ones used since the last redesign in 1965. Otherwise, year-over-changes were subtle, like the addition of side marker lights and shoulder safety belts. The ‘67’s large steering wheel hub was replaced by a soft “bar” spoke that ran through the diameter of the wheel. Ford built more than 55,000 Galaxie 500 4-door hardtops with a V8 in 1968, including the seller’s car.

This car looks to be a nice survivor and there is no mention of any previous body or paintwork. The burgundy paint with a tan vinyl top could very well be original to the car, but we wouldn’t fault anyone if they had been redone sometime in the last couple of decades. Though we don’t get any photos of the entire car, what we do see looks good with no obvious issues.

The interior looks original as well and the reported mileage is nearing 78,000. Which would mean the big 390 cubic inch V8 has likely seen minimal action in recent years. The seller doesn’t mention how well the car runs if it needs any work, and there is no list of any work that has been done. On the other hand, the asking price seems reasonable, especially since Hagerty pegs one of these cars in “good” condition to be worth $6,400. This could be a good car for someone looking to get into the vintage scene for the first time.

Ad has a tone that makes me want to buy the car and then back over the seller on the way out.

Here’s an example of — not every collector car needs to be a high-dollar muscle car. It looks to be in good shape, but wouldn’t be something one would spend a bunch of money making perfect. Maybe some improvements could be made (new rear bumper, repair cracked steering wheel, I’d go all the way for the family car look and install whitewall tires). But otherwise, just keep it running — not hard to do when most parts would be available at AutoZone.

You would get smiles and fun stories at shows, you wouldn’t worry if kids were nearby, and if the grandkids got some dirt on the carpet it’s no big deal.

The ad— I kind of get it. I haven’t sold much on Facebook Marketplace, but the most recent thing I am selling (small dollar stuff) has included a seller who texted “never mind” on my way to the meeting place, and another who didn’t even have that level of common courtesy— they simply didn’t show up.

I TOTALLY understand the guy’s attitude. FB Marketplace, in my experience is a terrible place to try to buy a car. Usually it’s the seller who doesn’t respond, which makes no sense, but it happens all the time. And I know that buyers flake out and don’t show up too. It’s annoying to say the least.

From seller’s listing: “If it’s up it’s available! Don’t hit is it available – will be deleted.” FB thoughtfully provides this question to send to seller: Hi Damon, is this still available?
    LOL

Might have been a fake ad to see what kind of reaction it got.

I just looked at/for the ad. Has been removed. that was quick. Seller obviously was in a hurry to get rid of it. Or, like another commenter said, might be a fake ad just to get folks to jump over the the website. I, too, have heard bad things about Market place If I get to sell some of my stuff, FBMP is not where I’ll go.

The ad has been removed so this Galaxie has probably been sold as the priced asked was pretty cheap. The four door hardtops looked a lot better then the sedans, especially with the windows down and the colors here are quite attractive. The full wheel covers give the car a nice look, too. The 390 will give decent performance, even considering these were heavy cars. A nice buy for somebody.

As long as the frame isn’t rotten, this is a great buy. The frames of these turn to dust in front of the rear axle. Hopefully that is not why this one wS reasonably priced. If solid, I would have been very interested in it.

Since it was listed in Citronelle, AL. perhaps it will be better than an 86 Escort or a low rider. But you never know.
