39K Mile King of the Road: 1990 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1

The 1990 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 was truly a revolutionary vehicle. This example is located in West Jordan, Utah and listed here on eBay. The car is not perfect even though it is said to have traveled only 39K miles since new. The seller is asking $22,995 but is willing to accept a best offer. The car is red with a black leather interior. The ZR-1 has the selective ride and handling package, 2 removable roof panels and power adjustable seats. Chevrolet built the ZR-1 from 1990-1995.

The base engine in the 1990 Corvette was the L98 V8 producing 250hp. The ZR-1 optioned engine was vastly different in many ways. Chevrolet and Lotus developed the ZR-1 engine and it was built by Mercury Marine. The ZR-1 engine was a 350 cubic inch V8 but featured aluminum alloy components, twin camshafts per cylinder head, and four valves per cylinder, making it a 32-valve quad-cam V8. Designated as the LT5, the ZR-1 engine delivered 375 horsepower with fuel injection. Mercury Marine was chosen for their expertise with aluminum engines. Power is transferred via a ZF-developed 6-speed manual transmission, with Bosch ABS and large 4-wheel discs for braking. The ZR-1 could complete the ¼ mile in 13.1 seconds, 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds, 0-100mph in 10.4 seconds, and reach a top speed of 175mph.

The interior looks to be in pretty good shape and is equipped with cruise control, air conditioning, a tire pressure warning system, a Delco Bose Gold Series sound system with CD and cassette players, as well as power windows and locks. There is noticeable wear on the shift knob. The leather-wrapped steering wheel features a central digital speedometer and fuel readout, which are flanked by an analog tachometer and gauges for oil pressure, oil temperature, coolant temperature, and voltage. As mentioned, the digital odometer shows 39,000 miles.

This 1990 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 is finished in Bright Red on the exterior and appears well-maintained. The seller notes the car has some fading of the paint on the front and back bumpers. While the car is now located in Utah, it is registered in California. The CarFax shows no accidents and that the car has been in Arizona and California. All good states for not accumulating any rust but fading from the sun is a factor. The car features 17″ alloy wheels (9½” front, 11″ back), which look clean and undamaged.

Noticeable wear on the shift knob is a great sign the car was used as intended by GM/Lotus and Mercury Marine. Dave McClellan would approve. Not surprised the listing ended, but I am a little concerned about the price. IMO, it seems too good to be true. 40K miles is a sweet spot. Not crazy miles, but enough to put it in the “Keep driving it” category. Hard to tell, but the original windshield may have been replaced.
