Ford didn’t spend a lot of money on updating the 1971 Ford Thunderbird. They instead put their money into the full-size Ford, Mustang, and the new Pinto. The Thunderbird did receive a new roofline treatment for the Two Door Landau and a new grille for all models. Other than this, they were pretty much like the 1970 models. Here is a 1971 Ford Thunderbird Four Door Landau for sale here on Craigslist in Mooresville, North Carolina.
My first car was a 1971 Ford LTD 2 door hardtop in this very same color combination, Gray Gold Metallic paint with a black vinyl roof. This car is in original condition and has only had two owners since new. It is equipped with front bumper rub strips and rear bumper guards. In 1971 the Four Door Landau, with suicide doors, was in its last year. The seller even says it’s not pretty, but it doesn’t look too bad in the pictures. There appears to be a minor indentation on the fender over the right front wheel opening. The paint could probably use a good polish but I don’t see any rust or thinning of the paint. It’s hard to tell the condition of the vinyl roof with the snow on it, but I think there is a rip near the center front of the top. This is also the last year of sequential turn signals on Thunderbird.
The interior is where the most help is needed. The driver’s seat is pretty much ripped up, probably due to wear and sun fading over the years. This car has the Brougham Interior Option with individual front seats in light gray gold cloth. The rear seat appears to be in good condition. The headliner, however, will need a little restitching. The car has Automatic Temperature Control air conditioning but no mention of its working status.
The engine is a 429 ThunderJet with a four-barrel carburetor that originally produced 360 horsepower. It is mated with SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission. The car only has 62,518 miles. It does run and drive. I have a weakness for Thunderbird Four Door Landaus, and since it’s in my first car’s color, I wouldn’t mind adding this one next to my 1978 Thunderbird Town Landau. But I just don’t have the room for it. So it can be yours if you’re interested in parting with $4,000. Any takers?
This era 4 door Thunderbirds are very different looking cars. Is it that hard to clean the snow off and take some better photos? If a person really wants to sell a car, it’s up to them to help the sale happen, then he says in the ad, the car is not pretty and that he does not know much about the car? Well, he must know enough to say the price is 4k firm. That much he knows I guess.. Great selling points Mister. I think it’s a pretty nice looking car.
Not the best exterior colour, but really nice to see a luxury car not burdened by a leather interior. Good luck with the sale.
So, is “Drives like a pissed off couch” one of those quaint southern euphoniums for, “comfortable but smells bad?”
That would be “Drives like a pissed-on couch.”
This car has a face that only a mother could love. It’s clear to see the influence on design from Bunkie Knudsen. It’s looks are a cross between Pontiac, Buick, and Oldsmobile. The “beak” gets in the way here, it looks like the design was rushed as the rest of the car looks ok. That being said, not a big demand for this car, 4k may be a bit high. Suicide doors are always cool and the engine is a plus. Could be a cool sleeper.
429 torquey goodness; hideous 1970’s landau badness.
Still, for $4K, you gotta give this one a bit of thought…
Assuming that the body is as solid as it looks in the picture, this might be a good entry-level project for someone.
As far as the seller being ‘firm’ on the price, I’m sure waving some cash would change that… ;-)
Starting to show some rust along bottom most trim molding on drivers side. by edge of front bumper, and right behind left rear wheel well. Also radio antenna is missing from right front fender. Surprised that it has automatic climate control, but only an AM radio, no FM or 8 track. Nice car but about $1000.00 to “firm” on price. You have to like these ‘Birds as they are not a good “flip” car.
Seeing a lot of these here lately.
Buy it for 2 grand.
Pull the Motor and put it in a Torino.
Why do you not use the Craigslist Ad Saver anymore? http://www.craigslistadsaver.com/about.php
This is the third time lately that the ad has been removed by the seller and we can no longer see the original ad.
Thanks, I do enjoy reading about your barn finds, but am disappointed when the ad is gone before the sun goes down.
Had this same car in burgundy years ago. The automatic Temperature Control is a nightmare. I would bet that the frame has rust. Parts are not easy to come by. You would pay way more than the car would ever be worth to bring it back. Too bad because they were great luxury cars.
If this T-bird is still available I want it. Please let me know.
