This 1977 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 is listed here on Craigslist. Mitchell G. found it for sale and it is located in Richmond, Virginia. The seller represents that the odometer reflects 76,000 miles. The Chevrolet Camaro Z28 was reintroduced in 1977 after taking a two year break. This one has an aftermarket hood scoop added to look like a 1980-1981 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. The seller is asking $29,950 and the car has been for sale for 4 days. The 1977 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 had painted bumpers and was mostly a decal package but stood apart from the rest of the Camaro lineup.
The interior looks very nice and the most important feature is the 4 speed shifter sticking out of the console. The seller states that the car is restored to show quality and won the People Choice Award but does not say if this was a national or local show. The car is black with the base black interior. Originally, the car had air conditioning and tilt steering although the air conditioning is not working due to a missing air conditioning compressor. The car appears to have an aftermarket radio.
From the factory, the Chevrolet Camaro Z28 came with an LM1 350 cubic inch V8 engine that was rated at 185 horsepower and 285 lb ft of torque. The top speed was reported to only be 105 mph. This car was one that was produced with a Borg Warner T-10 4 speed transmission. It appears that the original engine was replaced or has been modified. The underhood pictures show headers and what looks like a crate motor. One positive for performance was that 1977 Chevrolet Camaro Z28s were equipped with a 3.73:1 posi rear end.
The car came with 11 inch front disc and 9.5 inch rear drum brakes. However, rear disc brakes have been added. The car has stainless steel dual exhaust and rides on factory steel wheels and aftermarket tires. Chevrolet produced around 13,000 Z28s in 1977 which paled in comparison to the 68,744 Trans Ams that Pontiac produced.

Cool đ Camaro
Good looking car. Could use the specifications of the engine to get a feel for what you are buying.
My Mom’s 76 Malibu had an LM1 also, California Car, not sure what they changed for the Z28 Version. 105mph? maybe because of the 3.73 rearend
Yes top speed should be around 150 I topped out the speedo (140) mph in my 1977 305 Malibu
My favorite year when they brought them back!!
When GM stopped offering the manual on these cars in ’81(?), I was told that the car failed emissions at the precise moment the clutch was depressed. Now that could have been an older engineer having a little fun with one of the “suits” or maybe true. Does anyone know if there is any truth in that, or have I been fooled for 44 years? As one of Clints victims said “I gots to know”.
I bought a brand new 1979 Z with the 4-speed. First order of business was to remove the catalytic converter and replace with a straight pipe. It always passed NJ emissions for years afterwards. I donât remember any of the inspectors depressing the clutch while the sensor was in the tailpipe.
Didn’t big state run inspection stations look for a cat converter underneath using a hand held mirror on a long stick? Or did u take your car to a private garage to “pass”? If their test probe was used on YOUR car’s exh, i would say their exh testing equip was a joke, considering the ’79 exh was dirtier w/o a cat than a ’74’s exh – which had to pass w/o a cat – not ez for a ’74 to pass back then.
The factory ’77 flat hood graphics looked good too on a black z28.
You couldnât get manual transmission Z28âs or Trans Ams in California in the late-70âs or early-80âs, due to the states emissions regulations. I think the last year of this body style for some reason you could get a 305 4spd. It didnât matter much to most car guys since 60âs and early-70âs muscle cars were plentiful and cheap, rust wasnât an issue so they survived in large numbers, but became a good alternative as prices rose for earlier cars. When the state implemented semi-annual smog testing, which required all original emissions equipment be present and operational those late second generation Z28âs and Trans Ams instantly started filling the wrecking yards.

Many years before Volkswagenâs dieselgate, Southwest Research Institute would do emissions and fuel consumption testing on new cars. One engineer there claimed that GM had different ECU settings depending on whether the hood was open or closed. Open (as it would be during the lab tests) and it would run lean, but close the hood and they changed to more performance oriented settings. True or not I donât know.
Nice Camaro.
I don’t see anything particularly “crate motor” here. The Proform valve covers and air cleaner are items that you can buy at Summit. I have them on my car. Chevy markings and have a nice understated look as opposed to all of that aftermarket chrome stuff…
Is there a trans shifter within the car, or would we would have to provide one for the car??
@Tara, the shifter is there, steering wheel is hiding it.
My graduation year, it would be nice to drive that Camaro, then and now…
Very nice. I liked these when they first came out.
I bought the same car .Ordered it in Sept. of 76,delivered Dec. 6 76. No Z28’s were available at that time.I took a RS 350 4 SPEED Posi 2 tone silver and black interior . Put a 4 speed with lower first and second gear, and tooned exhaust .I just got into the 13’s at Norwalk speedway.Still have it with 40,106 on the miles
$29k? Show winner? I really don’t see either. Nice Camaro but units in this condition in my area (same latitude as Richmond) are only attaining around $20 max.
Well, itâs a dealer thatâs also a smart aleck – what can we expect? 29.9k is the âteal dealâ. And thatâs cash, not a check buddy – be sure to ask âwhoever wears the pants in your familyâ before contacting them as their âtime is valuableâ.
Small description, add some attitude, it doesnât seem like a recipe for success but hey, what do I know? :-)
Clone ! The badging is not correct for a true 77 z28 , not even close !
Also , the grill emblem position is off. And the taillight rings are black on a true black 77 z28 , not chrome
I have a true 77 z28 , black on black with gold badging . Stock aluminum m21 4 speed . Ordered without A/C , no console .
I have owned my z28 since 1989.
I rebuilt the 350cid right after purchasing the car , which pumped up the 180 hp to 375 hp. Odometer shows 40k miles.
Shouldn’t there be heat extractors on the front fenders for a Z-28?
