No Reserve 4-Speed: 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

This 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 is located in Townsend, Massachusetts and is represented as a survivor with original paint. The car is claimed to be one of 18,000 Z28’s that were built with four speed transmissions in 1979. The Camaro Z28 is listed here on eBay with 4 days remaining in the auction. the car is currently bid to $7,700. The seller recently purchased the car after trying to buy it for two years from the prior owner who has owned it since 1982. The prior owner made some modifications to the car including replacing the stock wheels, adding rear louvers and a aftermarket pioneer radio. He also installed aluminum intake manifold, Holley carburetor and added headers to help the car breathe and perform better.

The Z28 was equipped from the factory with a 175 horsepower 5.7 liter engine. While the engine had a lot less horsepower than say the Pontiac Trans Am with 220 horsepower, the Z28 could be ordered with a 3.73 rear gear ratio which helped it off the line. The car has approximately 110,000 miles on it, according to the seller. The ad states that the complete exhaust system, including the exhaust manifolds and catalytic converter, were saved by the original owner along with the factory wheels which are now mounted on the car. Prior to sellers purchase, the car not been driven in nine years due to fuel line leaks. During the prior ownership the owner replaced the clutch and also rebuilt the engine using a local speed shop.

The interior looks very nice and all the lights including the dome and dash lights were recently replaced. The headliner and carpet in the car need restoration along with the rear speaker shelf.  A lot of work has been done to remove and recondition the gauges and Dynamat sound deadening was added under the carpet and in the trunk. The dash has a few small cracks in it and the driver seat bottom is worn out. The heater, as well as the other accessories, including wipers, horn, floor vents, and dash vents are in working condition. The Z28 does not have air conditioning. A white ball shifter has been added to the shifter and it stands out nicely from the center console.

While the car was represented as original paint, it is missing some of the “original” paint primarily on the passenger side door. At first I thought that this was a racing stripe, but it’s actually just missing paint! The seller discloses that there is rust on the lower front fenders behind the wheels as well as dings and dents around the car. The floorboards have rust through on each side in the front and the trunk also has some modest rust damage. For a car that spent most of his life in the Northeast United States, it is probably in pretty good shape. By drier climate standards, the car is simply a driver with some rust issues.

The auction description is worth a read; it explains a lot, and leaves us wondering on a few details. I’m sure seller could explain. My question – did mice get in the wiring? They like to maintain their chompers on wiring!
He fixed many items that a flipper may not.
One could argue, with the black interior, the new stripes applied – in the seldom seem green motiv- could be changed to anything one wanted; blue, red, or ?

What a shame, those pics are terrible. I can’t make out what’s going on with the passenger side door and the owner doesn’t mention it.

Cant say ive ever seen this color combo. I like it a lot. Most ive seen in white have the blue stripes. Seen a couple with the red. This body style is so underappreciated, ive always thought they looked good.

Agreed heyday, and while not a fan of the color, the wheels make it. And with a cheap LS

Can i assume it STILL holds true that a (muffler) shop is not allowed to remove the cat converter & replace exh with true duals on a 1975 & newer car – & that you have to do it yourself – & even the latter may not be legal either?
Can’t say i remember seein green side stripes on a white z28 of this vintage..

In 1978, a local Midas shop removed my cat converter from my 77 Camaro 305 V8 and replaced it with a straight pipe and a Hush Thrush muffler. Can’t say there was any notable difference in performance, but it sounded better.

There’s a lot of things companies shouldn’t do, but when you’re willing to pay them they’ll do anyway. I’ve had the cats cut off several vehicles that were way, way newer than this one. It’s also like how there’s a huge market to tune and delete DEF systems off brand new diesel trucks. It’s illegal as all heck, but there’s money in it so companies do it anyway.

What did you do for yearly inspection back then?
Here in all of the big “assembly line like” big mass public state run inspection stations they checked underneath for the cat converter with a mirror on a long stick! – to make sure it was still there on every car that was supposed to have one waiting in line. LONG lines & usually a wait of even hours!
Not sure what would happen to the driver if they saw the converter was gone! lol

She’s no showroom beauty, but I like it. I especially love the white and green color combo. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever seen the green stripes on any other car. Anyway, this one has potential for anyone wanting to spend some cash to get her back to her former glory. Yeah, the pics aren’t the best, but I don’t see any giant rust holes and most of everything seems at least there. While doing a full restoration on this might be great, I think it’d be better just getting her running well, cleaning it up and driving as is. I mean, how cool is it it’s still got that Rusty Jones protection package sticker in the door jam!

    SOLD for $11,200.

One of the most honest EBay car ads I’ve read.
