4-Speed Too! 1966 Chevrolet Impala SS 396

Wanting to add some spice (and sales) to its already popular Impala, Chevrolet created the Super Sport in 1961. Only 453 copies were built that year, all with the “bubble top” roof and a minimum of 348 cubic inches under the hood. The next year, Chevy changed its strategy to make the car more about style than power and it worked – more than 99,000 Super Sports were delivered in 1962. Fast forward to 1966 and the SS was still popular, accounting for more than 119,000 units on the Chevy balance sheet. This ’66 Impala SS comes with two treats: a 396 V8 (you still could get performance) and a 4-speed manual transmission. This car, located in Omaha, Nebraska, needs a lot of work, but it may all be there. It’s available here on craigslist for $8,500. Thanks for the cool tip, Pat L.!

Chevy had a banner year in 1965. The new mid-size Chevelle was a hit in its second year and full-size production set a record, breaking the one million mark in output. So, it’s not surprising that things cooled down some in 1966, but the Impala SS saw the biggest drop. Why? Because the luxury Caprice, which was an option on the Impala in 1965, became a series of its own in 1966 and the public began scooping them up. Now the SS was no longer the top model on the totem pole. The 427 cubic inch V8 was new that year, but the 396 with an output of 325 hp was still popular, although we don’t know how many of them with a 4-speed manual went into Super Sports like the seller’s car.

This car was red on red when it left the factory, but time and Mother Nature have played the usual tricks. From the looks of things, this one is trying to sprout roots out in the field where it resides. Fortunately, rust doesn’t seem to have completely taken over, although there is a ding or dent here and there for the body shop to contend with. The chrome and glass all appear to be intact while the interior is waiting to receive a generous makeover.

We assume this car is the real deal as no one had thought to start cloning the Super Sports 50 years ago. The seller says the VIN is unavailable which would have helped the verification because the Impala SS had been a series of its own since 1964. This is a “cash and carry” deal (like the convenience store on the corner!) and the seller will even accept cryptocurrency!

What up with no pics of motor? One of the big selling points and no pics. People need to learn how to show a car before they try and sell a car. To lazy to lift hood? Or maybe not in car like it says it is.

This is like someone trying to sell you a house and you can only check and see the frontlawn and the backyard. no need to see the kitchen ,bedrooms and bathrooms etc.

Yup. Here we are, again, in the land of No Decent Pics. The old sayin’ is still hangin’ ’round. “If ya wanna sell it, ya gotta show it.” I’m not up to snuff with the value of these. I do know that a good one, including looks, will fetch a fair penny. Not much to go on in the description, either. Sad. If I were to bid, I would only offer $5K tops, using this article for a basis to go on. Not trying to be too critical, but not much to go on here, either.

Looks very familiar. I recall a comment about it, an interested party called the seller about getting pictures, I believe, potential buyer was told that the seller didn’t do things a certain online company does…😎
