41k Documented Miles: 1979 Datsun 280ZX

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Over the years, we’ve seen a few sellers make bold claims about odometer readings, and this 1979 Datsun 280ZX is no exception. However, the difference is that the seller has the documentation to verify it has 41,000 genuine miles on the clock. Its almost faultless presentation makes it ideal for an enthusiast seeking a pristine classic. You will find the Datsun listed here on Craigslist in Littleton, Colorado. The seller set their price at $21,000, and I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder PRA4SNW for spotting it.

It is almost impossible to criticize this Datsun’s presentation because it wouldn’t look out of place in a showroom. Its two-tone color combination of Pacific Blue and Midnight Blue oozes class, with the paint exhibiting a deep shine. There are a few tiny stone chips, but the overall impression is positive, and the panels are laser straight. I can’t spot any existing rust, and the seller mentions none in their listing. The trim and glass are as impressive as the rest of the exterior, and the wheels look flawless.

Datsun’s L-Series engines are some of the toughest production motors from Japan, and they enjoy a well-earned reputation for longevity. This 280ZX features the 2,753cc six-cylinder version that sends 135hp to the road via a five-speed manual transmission. As the Z-Car evolved, weight climbed as buyers sought more luxury features, and manufacturers fought to comply with tightening safety regulations. Although considered a sports car, that L-Series six took 17.3 seconds to launch the 2,753 lb Datsun through the ¼-mile. The figure was respectable but fell nearly a second short of that achieved by the earlier (and lighter) 240Z. The seller indicates that this Japanese classic has 41,000 genuine miles on the clock and that they hold verifying evidence. Beyond that, we’re flying blind. The text description in their listing runs to a mere ten words and provides no insight into how the car runs or drives. However, the tidy presentation and low odometer reading bode well for potential buyers.

Japanese classics from this era developed a reputation for being prone to interior trim deterioration, but there are few such issues with this Datsun. Its Black vinyl upholstery looks excellent, with no wear or physical damage. The dashtop hasn’t succumbed to UV exposure, and there is no crumbling plastic. The gauges feature clear lenses and crisp markings, and the console is damage-free. The steering column shroud is discolored, which is probably due to age, and finding a suitable replacement might be challenging. Retaining it untouched is viable, although some professional services could apply a plastic dye to address the issue. It looks like an aftermarket radio/cassette player occupies the spot reserved for the factory radio, and some of its controls appear to be missing. If the new owner seeks authenticity, locating the correct radio on an online auction site shouldn’t be difficult.

While Datsun’s Z-Car range has enjoyed great success in the classic world, the values of the 280ZX have taken a big hit recently. It is unclear whether values have bottomed out or whether they could drop further. That is one of the unknowns with purchasing a classic in such situations because a new owner could take a financial hit if prices continue falling. Alternatively, if they rise, buying when the market is at rock bottom could leave that person looking like a genius. This 280ZX is a beauty, and even allowing for recent market trends, its price seems highly competitive. It has only been on the market a few days, but I won’t be surprised if it finds a new home fairly quickly. Are you tempted to make it yours?

Actually I would be tempted to pick it up for my daughter. She loves the Japanese styling from that era. And authenticity isn’t much of a problem with her.

Cracked dash. Faded plastic. This thing sat outside for a long time. Would rather spend my money on something with higher miles and better keep. Probably for less or comparable cost.

Sat outside for a long time? I disagree. Minimal cracks in the dash pad.
Not typical of what you are describing.
On the other hand, with the lack of rust, low miles and 3rd pedal, this one looks quite interesting.

I have aeen tx cars with 300k miles with comparable interiors. Would love to see documentation. If it only has 41k. It will basically have to be mechanically rebuilt. Fuel injection etc.. rings are probably stuck. Engine bay also shows dulling. Of parts that should be shiny and surface rust. Bougt and sold a couple of hundred z cars. I would pass forthis price. Sold a similiar car with 80k documented miles with nicer interior. Oe radio. Golg on gols last year for 10k. That is about what this oneis worth

This is one of the rarer “base models” offered when the ZX came out in ’79. The GLP (Grand Luxury Package) was a separate model and boasted Cloth or Leather Seats, Power windows, custom wheels etc while the base model had vinyl seats, crank windows, wheel covers and weren’t available with T-Tops. I don’t believe A/C was even standard on them. Rare find!

Here’s a similar one that is coming up for auction. Will see if it brings $21K.

My son and I just finished considering a 1986 LTD with is 48,000 documented miles. Car looked show room new. No rust no fading no cracking , one owner. Test drive revealed , injectors shot , transmission seal shot , heater core blown and AC not working. Sitting for LONG periods of time doesn’t do a car any favors. Very disappointing

Stunning color, ugly front. 240 or 260 are the way. 0:-)

I’m gonna get some hate here but being Aussie, skin’s as tough as a Kakadu Croc’s. It is a lovely car and at that price, I would drive it but it does not compare with the 240Z or 260Z. By the 280ZX IMHO the lines have been butchered. And don’t get me started on those bumper bars. ;-)

I had the ’83 turbo version with t-tops IN THIS BEAUTIFUL COLOR!! I bought it with cash ($3,650) and it had around 33,000 miles on it at the time. This was in the mid nineties. Sigh, I adored that car. Until I let a boy drive it. He destroyed it and that was the end of it and him 💔. It was my first love ❤️.

A buddy of mine had one like this, same color and all.
But it was badly rusted within a few years – too bad, it was a really nice car to cruise around in.
The New England salty roads claimed another victim.
