440 V8 4-Speed: 1968 Dodge Coronet R/T Project

With the redesign of its intermediates in 1968, Dodge ramped up its game in the performance arena. The Coronet and the relatively new Charger got an R/T edition which brought along a 440 cubic inch V8 as standard fare. This project example has a 440 but it’s not original to the car but has been revived to at least the idle stage. Located in Waynesboro, Virginia with a collector of these Mopars, it’s available here on eBay for $19,995 Buy It Now, though the bidding has gotten to $10,915 without triggering the seller’s reserve.

Chrysler was at the top of its muscle game in 1968 with its two powerful Dodges and the Plymouth Road Runner and GTX models. The Coronet R/T sold in smaller numbers than the corresponding Charger, but still mustered about 10,500 units in ’68 (but just 5% of total Coronet output). Since its rework in 1965, the Coronet had been a mid-size family car (as had the Belvedere over at Plymouth). It held that position through the mid-1970s when Dodge retired the nameplate.

It’s a shame the seller’s car isn’t fully numbers matching, but the engine is at least mostly correct. The automobile wasn’t running when the seller acquired it, but some tinkering has gotten it to at least start. It won’t move around the yard, probably due to the 4-speed transmission (look at the shifter and you’ll see why). So, the somewhat rare Mopar (how many could be left?) will need mechanical as well as cosmetic attention as the vehicle has what is considered “typical” B-body rust problems.

The interior matches in color to the paint on the car. Both photos of the rusty cowl tag make it difficult to determine how the car was equipped when it was built. But many of the tags are said to match, like the radiator support and trunk lip gutter. A spare front fender and door are coming with the deal to help restore this once-fine Chrysler product. The seller is flush with other projects like this one and he/she will never get around to working further on this car, hence the reason for the sale.

    20 grand??? I know that Worman pays that kind of money for some of his finds, but those are usually numbers matching with something that makes them a little rare. (I also fail to see how that funky shifter would render it immovable.) There is a ton of stuff out there that a person would be better off dropping 20K on.

    Had this exact car. It looked better then this but only enough that I wasn’t completely ashamed to drive it. I always backed it into the driveway so I’d see that beautiful rear end when I walked out the door!
    Didn’t have A/C, in Florida, traded it for a ’79 Corolla SR5. I’d like to have both of them back!

    In 1968 these were much cheaper than a Charger. In some ways, I like them better. Of course, a Dart 340 would eat them alive with proper gearing.
