$4,500 Kansas Car: 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The capital of Kansas, Topeka, is where this inexpensive car is located. It’s a 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe and it’s found on Craigslist with an asking price of $4,500! It doesn’t get much cheaper than that for such a desirable car that looks this good.

There isn’t much information given about this car, but dang it looks great, doesn’t it? $4,500? There has to be bodywork / filler on this car, for this price it’s just too good to be true, isn’t it? I think I see some waviness here, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I could probably use some bodywork and I’m older than this car is!

1966 was the last year of the first generation Mustang and some (me) would argue that it’s the most desirable version of this car. I can’t get over how nice this car looks for $4,500! There are no interior photos so I’m not sure what shape it’s in, maybe that’s the glitch on this car? It has an automatic transmission, according to the seller’s listing.

You knew this would be a six-cylinder. A 289 V8 is probably more desirable for most folks, but give me a pedestrian model like this with a basic 3.3L, 200 cubic-inch six-cylinder any day of the week. This is what most people probably had and if the old car hobby is about reliving memories, why would you want a car that you never had? Maybe people like cars that they couldn’t afford back then and they can afford a top of the line, loaded Shelby Mustang now so that’s what they get. As a certified (certifiable?) oddball who loves unpopular vehicles, I’d want a six-cylinder in my 1966 Mustang. Doesn’t this car seem almost too inexpensive? What do you think about this one, is it worth more than $4,500 or am I way off on my values?

You’re right. Weird that no interior pix. Also, why are the windows fogged up on this car but not the one next to it and was the rear window trim chrome on top and black on the bottom?

      I don’t think it’s black…….I think it’s missing.

I agree that there is missing trim on both the front windshield and the rear window. Most likely new gaskets were installed on those windows when the repaint was done and now the owner or body shop people cannot get the trim to fit into place.

What does the seller think they are doing with such an incomplete listing? I am guessing there is much hidden on this car which is why it is requested interested buyers email for information.

It does look good, but I agree that parts are missing and the listing is suspicious at best. That being said, you can almost buy every single part for these cars from the aftermarket. The color is nice, but what lurks beneath?

An original example was in the Museum of Modern Art for awhile – absolutely classic design. When I had my Mustang I used to say there were only 2 kinds of people in the world – those who drove a Mustang and those who wished they drove a Mustang.

Everyone should own a Mustang at one time or another, just like everyone should own a Corvette at least once. You’ll either love them or hate them, but at least you’ll have a basis for your opinion.

Foggy Windows make me think: Very wet interior….(flood?)

Looks nice now, but that seems like the kind of fresh paint job that will bubble and crack within 2 years. Real Ford hubcaps would help a lot, those cheesy auto store wires are terrible.

If it’s too good to be true it’s too good to be true. That is how I illuminate a craigslist post.

I took the bait and sent an e-mail requesting interior pictures. We’ll see how that goes.

I love the last picture: a starter solenoid and spliced wire.

Nice work, sir! Definitely let us know if you hear back from them. I never, ever (EVER!) hear back from Craigslist sellers. Ever.

A new solenoid for a ’66 Mustang can be had for $9 from Summit Racing, maybe they thought that was a heck of a selling point that there’s a new one!

First impression is a nice car, but what would interior pics reveal, as well as an inspection of the floors and frame? Hmmm. Bingo pls post the pix if you get ’em!
