With the prices of 1971 Pontiac Trans Ams skyrocketing, it is inevitable to see some clones come on the market. A lot of enthusiasts disapprove of clones or reproductions of the originals for good reason. Sometimes the seller doesn’t disclose its lack of authenticity. That is not the case here. The car is clearly advertised as a tribute. Other than the nice condition of this car, another attractive feature is that it is priced at about half the cost of a driver condition 1971 Trans Am. This car is being sold by a dealer and listed here on eBay. It is located in Mundelein, Illinois with an asking price of $33,900.
While all 1971 Pontiac Trans Ams were equipped with the 455HOengine, this clone has a Pontiac 400 cubic inch V8 engine under the hood. The 455HO engine was unique and was the last of the round port head engines built by Pontiac, except for the Super Duty. It was rated at 335 gross horsepower and 480 ft-lb of torque. The engine as designated at the LS5 by Pontiac for the UPC code. The engine was also available in the Pontiac GTO. Not much is mentioned in the ad about any upgrades to the car’s 400 cid power plant.
The interior of this car is close to original but the seats are not true to the 1971 Pontiac Trans Am. This car has the 1973 – 1977 deluxe “horsecollar” seats covered in a non stock hobnail fabric. The ad states that this tribute has factory AC but that it is not working. Other options include tilt steering and an automatic transmission. There is an aftermarket radio cut into the dash and speakers installed in the door panels.
From 1970 through 1972, the Trans Am was available in Cameo White with a blue stripe down the center of the car or Lucerne Blue with a white stripe down the center of the car. The ad states that the paint on this car is in driver condition but looks shiny in the pictures. Pontiac built 2,116 Trans Ams in 1971 which was very low production compared to later years.
So I see the headline “455 HO Tribute” and I’m expecting a 1/87th scale diorama…………
Lose the 455 HO sticker on the shaker & still have an awesome ride.
Bruce,
70-72 Trans Am was Polar White. Cameo white began in 73.
Pontiac did a great job on designing this year car & you wouldn’t mistake it for a camaro. While the 455 HO is legendary I was a little put off by the lower horsepower number compared to say LS6 .
I don’t know what to call this, but “Tribute” is incorrect. Maybe a “conglomeration of multi-year Firebird parts” would be more accurate?
Nah. A “tribute” it’s not. It’s a hack job of a formerly nice car. I do like the body style but not the downgrades.
So close, yet so far ….
