The Dodge Challenger arrived at the “pony car” party a bit late, with Dodge being the last U.S. manufacturer to field a new entry. Between 1970 and 1974, they would sell 165,000 Challengers which is a lot of cars, but only a little more than what Ford did with the Mustang in 1973 alone, the year the seller’s car was built. This one is a Rallye edition, which means it has a numbers-matching 340 cubic inch V8 (which was in its last year on the options list). It looks to be in stellar condition (with one repaint) and may only have 46,000 miles to its credit. Located in Bath, Pennsylvania, this Mopar is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $32,000.
Changes in the muscle car market were already afoot when the first Challenger was sold. Due to rising insurance premiums, Chrysler dropped big-block engines from the Challenger (and Plymouth Barracuda) roster after 1971. Gone were the 383, 440, and 426 Hemi, and by 1973 only two V8s were offered: the base 318 and the 340 which was rated at 240 hp. The latter had ample power to get the job done and made for a lighter car to muscle around corners. That’s the setup in the seller’s car, along with a 727 automatic transmission.
Though the seller’s photos could be better, they do show a capable and attractive Dodge. The seller confirms the bronze paint has been redone and from the looks of things that may have included the engine compartment. The 340 V8 also looks to have been repainted, though there’s no hint of a rebuild as the car’s mileage is said to be under 50k. This car has the desirable Rallye Package, which replaced the R/T after the big engines went south.
New components on this Challenger include the exhaust system, Torque Thrust wheels, and tires. The interior looks quite good, though the dark photos don’t help present the black vinyl bucket seat passenger compartment. The seller will entertain a trade for an A-body Mopar (the Challenger was an E-body), which included the Dodge Dart and Plymouth Barracuda (before 1970). Kudos for this cool Chrysler Corp. tip, T.J.!
Exceptionally clean, and seems to be a very good price. No mention of the title status, though. “Willing to trade for a body MoPar”. Unusual wording but maybe I’m just a little bit too skeptical..

Design and proportions of these were absolutely on point. Always wanted Dad to bring one of these home during his short stint at the local Mopar dealer, but he stayed with the Fury III demonstrator. Great looking car in what appears to be quite nice condition. GLWTS!
