51k-Mile Survivor: 1976 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Colonnade styling was still going strong at GM in the mid-seventies, with the Chevrolet Monte Carlo being one of those cars which featured distinctive lines and a beautiful outside appearance all the way around.  By 1976, the second-generation days were numbered, with an all new and downsized MC due for arrival in ’78.  However, the coupe got a new front end with quad rectangular headlights plus a fresh grille for its next-to-last year of production, giving it a more modern look than its predecessors.  This 1976 Chevrolet Monte Carlo here on eBay is almost a ten on the scale, with just a couple of exterior blunders preventing it from attaining this score.  The good news is it might be a nine, so head up to Tacoma, Washington, if you’d like to check this one out in person before deciding how much you’re willing to invest here.  It’ll have to be more than $10,300, as that’s where the high bid stands now.

The Lime Green color is loud, but it screams seventies and works well with the Monte Carlo body.  The finish is said to be original, with the seller describing the paint condition as great, and it does present very nicely overall.  Unfortunately, the passenger side door and the hood are both dented, so a couple of body repairs will await the next owner.  The good news is that all of the panels are stated to line up correctly, and there is no rust to be found anywhere, including the underside.  That white vinyl top compliments the very green body nicely, with the owner claiming that the roof material remains in perfect shape.

This one’s claimed to actually have the fairy tale background we all dream about running across.  The seller says the original owners just drove their Monte Carlo to church and the grocery store, and that the 51,000 miles showing are actual.  Three different-sized V8 engines were available in ’76, with this one having the middle-of-the-road 350.  It’s said to start right up every time and provide good power, with the automatic transmission claimed to shift smoothly.

As well as everything presents inside, it’s a good testament to the level of care this one’s received, and an indicator that the mileage is probably correct.  Even the white vinyl seats are nicely preserved, and it’s cool too that they both swivel.  It’s easy to understand the appeal here, but one concern I might have is getting the paint to match, once the door and hood are straightened out.  However, the overall condition may merit a premium price, and even if the entire car needs a respray to blend properly, that seems justifiable in this case.  What are your thoughts on this 1976 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?

WOW! That color just jumps right out at you. Sour apple green?

I can see the low miles- I love a dark green (had a green Olds and a green HD) but I’d be ashamed to drive this one. I bet the auto workers laughed at this one all the way down the assembly line.

In the 70s this was super cool! I’m guessing the workers all wanted one

I didn’t see the hood dent, but the dent on the door doesn’t look bad to repair; no sharp creases.
I actually don’t think the lime color is terrible with the white vinyl roof & white interior to contrast nicely.
Options are nice; would’ve been a tad better with a gage package.
Beautiful car for the lucky buyer.

Very nice! However I do prefer the looks of the original round headlight design.

WOW, what a Stunner! Take me to Monte Carlo! The only NEW car I ever bought was a triple black 77 Monte Carlo. The *Go for Baroque * styling with gold pinstriping made it an OTT cruiser, attracting attention throughout the five years I owned it. At 110,000 miles rocker panel rust though helped me reluctantly to sell. Not loaded, but well equipped it listed for $6,349. Looking at a 79 Monte Carlo (before selling mine) I had NO interest in a smaller car with a V6 and a list price of just under $9,000. This rare survivor is an eye popping beauty. LIME 😉 inclined to predict a bidding war for this 76. 👍.

Loved these cars when I was a kid, especially the rectangular headlights.

That hood was the single biggest and heaviest piece of sheet metal I ever handled in my parts counter days. You could land a Zeppelin on that hood.

Oh yeah! Looking out over acres of sculptured hood with hood ornament (77) gave the feeling of King of the Road piloting a LAND YACHT! Right Jon R?

You are correct, sir! Always appreciate your play on the English language.
Didn’t see your appearance in the comment section for the god-awful carriage roofed blue and white ’84 Seville.

Jon, it’s always great to hear from you. I decided to pass on THAT Seville. Although I believe Too much is NEVER enough, and liked those Seville bustle backs, for Once, the acutrements (especially faux convertible top), THAT Seville was Way TOO much, even for me. Fun fact, In 56 DeSoto offered a two door hardtop labeled Seville. Cadillac threatened legal action. No more DeSoto Sevilles. And a few years later, no more DeSotos. SIR eously! 😉

My buddy Dwight had one the same color when we were in high school except his was a column shift, the odometer had a glitch that when it was at 36999 it would not roll over to 37000. It went back to 36000. We had a lot of fun cruising around in that car, glad I was not in there for its final ride. High speed a curve in the road and a little too much beer, ok a lot of beer led to its end. Dwight made it out pretty much unscaved tho. We lost him a couple of years ago to age related health issues.

I have been staring at these photos in disbelief. Long time fan and former owner of several Montes here and I have never seen this one in this color. I kind of like it. Bet it would attract a lot of attention at any car show.

Factory code 916 LIME green. This color was not very popular. But I agree, it turns me green with envy! 🏆

Wow, absolutely beautiful, so many of these Monte Carlos came in boring white or silver with black interiors. The green with the white is just gorgeous.

I had a ’77… Silver blue metallic with a half vinyl and light blue velour bench interior. It had the lowly 305 w/column shift. It was a bargain basement one but, I still say it was the best car I ever had.
I sold it to buy a new 1981 Corvette. That was an all-time bad decision. The Corvette was a good car but, I really missed the Monte. What a nice driving car!

Have to say that the whitewalls need to stay. Putting RWL on would really detract from the cosmetics. Colors are too bright for other than tidy whities.

I love the color, but not on a Monte Carlo.

Without documentation, mileage on these is always debatable.
That oil change sticker does provide some minimal paperwork evidence. All said though, this one presents a pretty convincing story. If a “minty” mid 70’s Monte is what you want, you just found it.

As an appraiser, it is pretty easy to verify mileage without documents. Many low mileage cars or estate cars have little documentation or service records simply due to the lack of use and low miles. Often times they have been stored for decades and not driven or serviced.

I had a 76 Monte mahogany on mahogany swivel buckets paid $1,800 for it in 1982. It had 99,000 miles drove it daily in types of weather. Only ever did brakes, radiator and exhaust. At 203,000 miles the trans gave up despite my annual transmission flushes. One of the best cars I have owned since 1973. I remember this color, yuck, because I was the assistant service manager at a very busy Chevy dealer in 1976. I love the condition of this beauty and due to that I’d love to own this, buy just bought a 35,000 mile 09 Town Car and my garage is full.

You’ll Love your Town Car. I have a 2007 Signature Limited (just turned 75,000 miles). If you treat it right, it will easily go over 300,000 with only routine maintenance. A magazine article referred to these last generation Town Cars as the American ROLLS-ROYCE. It’s like riding on a cloud in comfort and luxury. Truly the last gasp of traditional American Luxury sedans. 🏆

If the AC just needed a recharge you think the seller wound have done it. Experience tells me it will probably need more than a recharge. I don’t know that for a fact but that is my opinion.

Seems to be the .most common ” needs to be” on BF. Why don’t these sellers do this before?
May as well convert to 134 during repairs.

The dent in the hood is directly in line with the driver side headlights. It’s about 6 inches from the front edge of the hood. The dent in the door is larger than it appears. The dent upper edge is just below the door handle and the lower edge is just above the door trim at the bottom of the door. The bodyside moulding is damaged and the short piece on the quarter is missing the white insert.

Great car! Wish I had room for this. I had a 76 Grand Prix in this same Lime/white color combo, although my interior was white buckets with BLACK dash and carpet, which looked much classier than all the green inside of this one. But that said, this is still one beautiful machine. I liked the Lime color from the start and grew to love it even more as time went on. Sold the GP for an 83 Camaro Z-28 with t-tops, but sure wish I had kept it.

I want to buy it just so I can go to car shows and put Kermit the Frog on the hood with a banjo, playing “It’s not easy being green” through a speaker hidden in the grille.

Already up to $12K……Man I love the look of this ride, the body work is minor if you know a good PDR guy, which I do…..A/C non issue as to 134 changeover, update the factory am/fm to a concealed modern usb and you’re done, ready to cruise and show
