54k Original Miles: 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396

There are cars that have the “wow” factor, and this 1969 Chevelle SS 396 definitely seems to fall into that category. It is a car that not only presents nicely but is also a low mileage, numbers-matching beauty. With these factors in mind, it’s quite surprising that there are currently only 25 people watching the listing here on eBay. I would be willing to bet that this number will probably increase quite markedly in the very near future. The Chevelle is located in Stamford, Connecticut, with the seller setting a BIN price of $34,500. The option is also available to make an offer on this beautiful blue beast.

The owner doesn’t mention whether the LeMans Blue paint on the Chevelle is original, or if the vehicle has been the subject of a repaint at some point in its life. I’m inclined to believe that it has been repainted, but if it hasn’t then it is remarkably well preserved. It has a fantastic depth of shine to it, and there isn’t any rust or rot visible anywhere. The owner doesn’t mention the state of the floors or frame, but if outward appearances count for anything, then it should be pretty good. The Chevelle is fitted with aftermarket wheels, but the original Rally wheels are included with the car.

The interior of the Chevelle is just as impressive as the exterior. There doesn’t appear to be any indication of rips, tears, or stains anywhere, and those enormous floor mats suggest that the owner is being very careful to preserve the condition of the carpet. There is an aftermarket radio/cassette player fitted into the dash, but the owner seems to have done a nice job of concealing the speakers, because I’ve looked at the photos, and I can’t see them. I suspect that there might be a false cover on the rear parcel tray and that they might be hiding under there.

If you love your Chevelles, there can’t be many things better than finding a numbers-matching SS396. That’s precisely what you get with this car. The engine is the 325hp version of the 396ci V8, which is backed by the original Hydra-Matic transmission. The car is also fitted with power steering, power front disc brakes, and factory air conditioning. The owner states that the car has covered a genuine 54,400 miles, and while he holds the original Build Sheet and Protect-O-Plate, he doesn’t mention whether he holds any evidence to back the mileage claim. He also doesn’t mention how the car runs and drives, but the presentation under the hood is pretty nice.

This 1969 Chevelle SS 396 is a desirable car, and if the general appearance of the car is any indication, it is also in pretty impressive condition throughout. For someone seeking a classic that they can drive and enjoy immediately, this car looks like a strong candidate. This is a car that would attract plenty of attention wherever it went for all the right reasons, and that’s why I think that it will probably sell fairly quickly. Are any of our readers interested in becoming the car’s new owner?

I cam very close to buying a ’69 Chevelle SS 396. There was a bright orange one with white vinyl roof in the showroom of the Chevy dealership. I drooled over it for over an hour before me better judgment overruled my adolescent impulsiveness. I ended up driving home a 300 two-door coupe with a 230/3spd manual. The only option was an AM radio. I didn’t even realize that it didn’t have a block heater until the following winter when the temperature suddenly dropped to 25 below. I loved that car, and wish it had it back…

I’d buy it now! If the mileage is true I think that it’s a fair price.

But you gotta admit, banging through the gears with a big block is a lot more fun than just sitting there.

It’s an exceptionally good looking car. It looks like a buy and drive IMO. Hope that in the real life it’s as good as it appears.

Are you saying you want this car to be put in a barn to rot away? that’s just despicable

The lack of a nasty 30-cent plastic fuel filter makes my heart sing.

The reason you see a lot of them plastic filters is that the internal filter on the Q jet would constantly clog. till you got P*** off and removed it and added the plastic filter.

You are right. It was the first thing to go. The next step on a Quadrajet is to adjust the secondaries choke butterfly to open when you shut the glove box or a slight breeze to over the car.

I think it’s actually Dusk Blue (code 51), not LeMans Blue (code 71) – either way, a very nice color. I didn’t realize you could get cloth seats in ’69 SS396 Chevelles. I thought vinyl was the only option – I’d like to see the Trim Tag to verify. Also, appears the car was built at the Kansas plant. The Trim Tag should have an “L” on it – below the paint code which may verify it’s a true SS396. But either way, a very nice SS396. Don’t see too many like this anymore…

The car is 50 years old. You think that’s original seat fabric? Think again

I’m not questioning whether the interior is original or not, just if it really came with cloth seats originally. I’m guessing it’s a base the 300 Deluxe Coupe with the RPO Z25 SS396 package – which probably resulted in the cloth interior.

If I remember correctly, the base 300 coupe came with vent windows and had exposed wipers in 69. This seat fabric looks like something one might choose to replace the vinyl about 25 years ago.

Beautiful! The only thing better would be if it were an El Camino.

I’m drooling right now. If no rust issues, seems a fair price. My buddy in HS had a brand new red one, same engine but 4-speed. He hopped it up with a hotter cam, exhaust and 411 gears. It was scary fast for the time. Man I coveted that car.

Now that’s a beautiful thing. Right color, transmission, engine, wheels, everything for cruising. My number one favorite year for SS 396 Chevelles.
It doesn’t have one of the hotter versions of the 396 or a floor shift, bucket seats or for many here a 4 speed, yadda yadda yadda. They don’t come much cleaner than this. Sweet machine!

You can always put the automatic back in for originality but I agree with Skorzeny!! Tremec 5 speed would be so much more fun

Typical GM (keep them on their toes) muscle car. Always scratching at something that doesn’t itch. A butt whipping big block with a bench seat and column shift. You know there had to be this accountant that demanded they be built this way to maximise overall profit and forced them on dealerships. There is a butt for every seat. This car could have been an ad car for the dealer. “A all new 1969 Chevelle 396 SS only $2888.88.” A salesman would get fired for selling it before trying to get the customer off the ad car and on to another more optioned higher priced Chevelle. A true tradition of new car sales that is right up there with a salesman throwing your trade-in car key on the roof of the dealership so don’t leave.

Patrick Farmer- How do you know this car wasn’t ordered like this. Where did you come up with that story? Were you buying new cars in 1968 or 1969?

Wow Steve, you triggered a memory for me with your comment.
I was a freshman in high school, early 70s, a senior in shop class had the same car, similar color, similar mods, def 411s, posi, headers, cut outs, dual hollys, barely street legal.
He was nuts, fearless, went on a parts run with him during shop class and he seemed overjoyed scaring the living bejeasus out of me on two lane Ohio country roads rolling it in reverse a bit then pounding a smoking launch and hitting all 4 hill hopping. Had to be topping a hundred a number of times. I was terrified, dam near ripping the door handle off. He prided himself on bragging to classmates about the rubber burn mark signatures he left on the roads. He was nuts, certifiable, ended up in Hollywood as a stunt driver last I heard. Those were the days pre emmission crap, surprised I survived.
