55k Mile 1977 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Coupe

Enthusiasts seeking a turnkey classic wearing the iconic Bow-Tie badge may find themselves drawn to this 1977 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Landau Coupe. It presents exceptionally well, and its list of factory options includes the badge’s range-topping 350ci V8. It has a genuine 55,000 miles showing on its odometer, and its overall condition reflects that figure. I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder Rocco B. for spotting the Caprice listed here on Craigslist in Madison, Wisconsin. The seller set their price at $24,500, which appears to be higher than the top end of the market. Let’s take a look to determine whether that figure is justified.

Chevrolet introduced its Third Generation Caprice range for 1977, with buyers offered three body styles. The Coupe is probably the most interesting, featuring an aerodynamically efficient rear window design that was only available for three years. This ’77 Caprice Classic Landau Coupe is one of those vehicles, ordered in Antique White with a Firethorn vinyl top. If a known history is one of your prerequisites, this Caprice ticks that box. It is said to be a genuine one-owner vehicle, meaning that any claims made should be verifiable. The seller doesn’t mention a history of repairs or restoration, suggesting that the car is a genuine survivor. Its paint shines nicely for its age, the panels are straight, the vinyl looks crisp, and there is no evidence of rust. It isn’t stated specifically, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this classic only sees use during the warmer months, remaining protected from adverse weather conditions inside a warm and dry garage. The bright trim looks extremely good for its age, and there are no visible issues with the tinted glass.

Sadly, the seller supplies no engine bay shots, which is disappointing considering that this Caprice’s drivetrain combination is one of its strongest selling points. Buyers could order a ’77 Caprice Classic with an entry-level 250ci six delivering 110hp, according to that year’s Sales Brochure. However, this car heads straight to the top of the class, courtesy of its 350ci V8. This was the most potent engine available in 1977, sending 170hp to the road via a three-speed Hydramatic transmission. Standard equipment included power assistance for the steering and the front disc brakes, guaranteeing an effortless driving experience. The seller claims that this Classic has a genuine 55,000 miles on the clock, and although they don’t mention verifying evidence, the ownership history suggests that it may exist in the form of Service Records. The deal includes the original Title and Window Sticker, with the seller confirming that this Caprice runs and drives extremely well.

The “Firethorn” theme set by this classic’s vinyl top continues when we focus on its interior. The combination of knit cloth and vinyl looks spotless, further supporting the mileage claim. There is no evidence of wear, the carpet is immaculate, and there are no issues with the dash, pad, or wheel. The CB radio appears to be the only addition to an interior featuring air conditioning, power windows, power locks, cruise control, a tilt wheel, deluxe seatbelts, and an AM/FM stereo radio.

The seller’s price for this 1977 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Landau Coupe sits well beyond the top end of the market. Its spotless condition helps its cause, as do the odometer reading and the range of factory options chosen by the first owner. The quirky rear window design, only available for three years, helps it to stand out in any crowd. The reality is that even for all of those positive attributes, $24,500 still represents a major investment. Will it find a buyer? I honestly don’t know, but with the classic world capable of throwing the occasional curveball, it is certainly possible. Stranger things have happened.

I learned to drive in the four door version of this car.

Always loved the back window design.

Nice to see a red interior. Too bad we’re limited to Black and Tan today.

First year for GM’s downsizing. I liked them enough to trade my 73 Impala for one, though do to 2 young children I had to go 4 door. I have always wanted a coupe and always wished Chevy had decided to bring back an SS version. This car is gorgeous, but I think over priced by about $10k in today’s market. We’ll see.

I’m guessing this Landau didn’t see too many Wisconsin winters. What a neat find, good one Rocco. Be very interesting to see the final sale price.

This one really looks like its in mint condition. I always liked the unique rear window the 2 doors had. These were all very good cars from GM. Getting one with a 350 is a huge plus. Hopefully it has a THM 350 at the least. Great interior too.

2nd car I ever owned was a ’77 Caprice AeroCoupe, but with the 305 V8. It was reliable transportation but nothing exciting. Paid around $800 for it (1986) and sold it for around the same.

I had 3 77 Impala wagons with the 350 and all 3 had the trannys go out at the 125,000 ish mark. Dad had one like the one for sale. Triple black, smooth cars. Like to have this one.

I had one of these in a 1978, and it was a pretty good car. After years of it being outdoors, the roof rotted under the vinyl, and it was raining inside just as much as outside.

nice ride. great colors. the C/L ad comes up with a scat Pac challenger though. the asking price is stiff. not too sure they will get that maybe at an auction. i would put a set of 15×8 rallies on it.

Someone must have liked it enough to pay the price, or the owner changed his mind, because it’s no longer listed in Craigs list.

Wouldn’t have given him a dime over 18K. Nice car but the owner has dollar signs in his eyes that tell me he knows he couldn’t get the 24K for it.

When I transferred to a tech support position in 1980 my company gave me a white Caprice as a company car that a Manager had for a couple of years. It had a different vinyl roof treatment on the back part but the distinctive rear window and wire wheel covers rang up. It had a blue velour interior and we named it the White Whale. It also held 4 in the back seat and we had many adventures in the Bay Area, including getting towed away from a private lot. Thanks for those memories.

When my daughter turned 16 and was driving, we gave her a 4-door model of this very car, she called it Gertrude and hated it. I said OK but this is your car and its free, would you prefer to walk. I said when you prove you are a good driver and haven’t got hurt or hurt anyone else, we will talk about an upgrade. It worked out fine and she is a good driver. She can teach you how to double clutch, has driveb auto co

I just wanted to ad a footnote to my comment, she can double clutch and teach you how to do it. She has raced auto cross and had motorcycles. Now she is an executive in advertising, lives in Brooklyn New York and couldn’t drive a car if she had one. But I remind her all the time she is still a gear head,

No mention if this otherwise loaded Caprice has the vaunted F41 Sport Suspension. Thst option and its thick sway bars gave the Caprice some serious dance moves. Great cars that formed the basis for thousands of police and government vehicles, only to give up thst position to the Crown Vic when GM moved to front drive sedans.

These were long on the roads and nice to see. But give me FOUR DOORS — I can’t stand coupes! I am a full-size sedan man.

I had a four door version in 1980 as a company car. Drove it 90,000 miles in less than a year up and down the New Jersey Turnpike between Philly and New York. Mine was also white and so were the NJ State police cars, which were also Chevy Impalas at the time. Never had a problem with left lane hogs for some reason. Nice car, brings back memories!

That isn’t the OEM instrument panel; it’s from a later model. I think this listing is a scam.

Had a 1977 4 door in the early 1990’s with a 305 engine with the same color inside as this one with gray/silver outside in NJ. It was a decent car and got me to work no problem in the winter storms!!

The loss of frameless door glass for this gen – espec on 2 doors is a big step backwards, IMO. You gotta think the prev gen offered better side crash protection with their thicker/heavier doors. & the same, comparing 3rd & 2nd gen F-bodies.
