55K-Mile 2003 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning

Type in “Ford Lightning” on a search line and see what you get. I’ll wait (tapping foot, looking at watch, listening to elevator music). You already know what you’ll get, the new Ford Lightning EV, not one like this 2003 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning. The seller has this gas-burning tire burner listed here on eBay in Chico, California and they list a buy-it-now price of $34,000 or you can make an offer.

This SVT Lightning is beautiful. I bet even the random guy walking by in the background glanced over and wondered what planet this truck was from, certainly not from Earth in 2023. Truth be told, I am a fan of EVs, I think all vehicles have a place in society and on the roads and I don’t make fun of anyone else’s vehicle likes or dislikes. (well, overly-jacked-up angry pickups maybe) But, give me this SVT Lightning or the previous generation version over a new EV Lightning any day.

Ford started offering a performance pickup named the SVT (Special Vehicle Team) Lightning in 1992 in response to Chevrolet’s SS454 and none other than racing legend Jackie Stewart provided his expertise on turning a pickup truck into a fast, fun-to-drive vehicle. I really like the early ninth-generation models for their almost innocent looks, but they weren’t as fast or refined as the tenth-gen Lightenings.

This truck looks like a jewel, I don’t really see a flaw anywhere, but you Ford experts may pick out something that isn’t quite perfect. The tenth-generation SVT Lightning was made from 1999 to 2004 and all were rear-wheel-drive. The interior looks outstanding as does the short bed, which all SVT Lightnings had. The seller has owned it since 2018 and is the second owner. They say there is no rust and I believe it after looking at the photos, what a beauty.

The engine is Ford’s 5.4-liter OHV supercharged V8, which from 2001 on had 380 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, more than enough to do a Jay Leno-like burnout. The original SVT Lightning had 240 hp, quite a difference. This example is ready to go, and has no leaks or any other issues. Hagerty’s at $32,700 for a #3 good-condition example and $41,300 for an excellent example. What’s your offer on this beautiful SVT Lightning?

This generation of F-150’s, with its more-aerodynamic styling, was a big departure from the blocky previous generation(s). I think this was the best-looking of the group. The short wheelbase, special body and interior parts, and performance wheels/tires came together well. And it has the horsepower to back it up. No surprise that nice ones like this bring solid prices.

So, Scotty, I agree: this Lightning indeed is “beautiful.”

Fastest production truck all 5 years produced. Guiness record top speed record at 147 mph.

    5.2 to 60 and qtr in 13.7.

Stunning example, lots of bugs worked out by 2003. Beast.

I bought an 03 new and it’s still in my stable. Looks like 20″ rims and that’s a Whipple on top of the engine. I have thought of going to bigger tire as the 18″ tires are slim picking. 295-45-18 is only available from limited manufacturers. But like the stock rims. Yeah for a pickup it gets it! All about smiles per mile.
