The right paint color can bring an added touch of class to any car, and that is the case with this 1985 Monte Carlo SS. It presents beautifully, and the color helps the vehicle to combine touches of muscle with refinement. It has a genuine 55,000 miles showing on the clock and is in search of a new home. Located in Central Bridge, New York, you will find it listed for sale here on eBay. Bidding has been quite spirited and has pushed the price along to $13,111. The reserve has been met, so a new home now beckons for this 1980s classic.
Chevrolet offered the Monte Carlo SS in four colors for the 1985 model year. While White, Black, and Silver would be colors that you might expect, Deep Maroon Metallic was something of a left-field choice. It endowed the vehicle with a very different look to its siblings and was a classy addition to the palette. That is what we find gracing the panels of this SS, and it does look extremely nice. The paint has a beautiful shine to it, which is thanks to the Chevy receiving a high-quality repaint in the early 2000s. The panels appear to be as straight as an arrow, and rust does not seem to be a concern. The Monte Carlo has been garaged its entire life, and the owner does state that it is rust-free. The stripes have held up well since the repaint, and there are no signs of any issues with the external trim or the glass. The car comes fitted with a set of 1985 SS wheels, but the originals are also included in the sale.
Lifting the hood reveals the L69 305ci “HO” V8, and in the case of the Monte Carlo SS, it pumps out a respectable 180hp. Bolted to the back of this is the 200-4R automatic transmission, which was the only one offered in the SS. This combination endowed the 3,335lb Monte Carlo with reasonable levels of performance in a 1980s context. The ¼ mile could be despatched in 16.4 seconds, which, while not blindingly fast, was still considered respectable at that point in time. The vehicle is a numbers-matching car and has a claimed 55,000 genuine miles showing on its odometer. The owner doesn’t mention whether he holds evidence to verify this claim, but the fact that he has owned the car since 1999 suggests that this is a possibility. What he does hold is the original Build Sheet, which will be included in the sale.
The interior is as unmolested as the rest of the SS, and it generally presents at the sort of level that you might expect for a low-mileage survivor. The front seats have some noticeable edge wear, especially on the outer edges. It isn’t horrible, but there is more here than I would have expected in this car. However, this is a car from the 1980s, and trim from that era was renowned for deteriorating readily. The rest of the Maroon trim looks good, with no sign of any problems with the plastic. That is a victory in itself because plastic trim was notoriously fragile and could turn to dust reasonably quickly. The original AM/FM radio/cassette player is still present, while the car comes equipped with air conditioning, power windows, a tilt wheel, and cruise.
No matter how careful an owner tends to be, cars from the 1980s can tend to look rough around the edges pretty quickly. This 1985 Monte Carlo SS has managed to largely escape that fate, with some wear on the seats being its only notable flaw. It has attracted a significant amount of interest since it was listed for sale, and its overall condition makes this easy to understand. It seems that someone is about to score themselves a tidy, low-mileage survivor, and I envy them for that. It would be wonderful if it were one of our own Barn Finds readers. Could it be you?
I always liked the looks of this model and the color. Shame it was slow as a rock.
Does the air cond work ?
Had one (same color too), slow as a rock towing a rock. Looked great, not fun to drive. But popular – mine was stolen.
You dont need to go fast when you good
Definitely one of the nicer North American cars from the 80’s. This one looks clean & the color suits the car.
Better at looking at a T-Type Regal (1986) or renamed (Regal T) in 1987. Same drive train as a grand national. Same body style
Always thought of these as a gutless GN.
Those are 1986-1988, not 1985, wheels fitted to the car.
