5,691 Miles? 1980 Corvette In Virginia

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The seller tells us that this 1980 Chevrolet Corvette has only 5,691 miles “to the best of my knowledge.” Parts of the car certainly look like this could be true, but I would recommend an in-person inspection. If you are interested in finding out more besides what is in this post, the craigslist ad is here. The car is located in Roanoke, Virginia and the asking price is $10,500 or best offer. Thanks to Ian C. for this neat find!

I like the color a lot, and I actually like the later style cars with the spoilers, body color bumpers and glass back. The shut lines are pretty much as good as a Corvette of this vintage gets.

Obviously in a parade — is that some paint damage around the passenger side headlight?

There’s hardly any wear at all on the interior, but why not vacuum the carpet a little better?

And why does a car with those miles on it need an aftermarket air cleaner (and maybe fan?) And ignition? I would think the value would be in keeping the car completely stock? Regardless, a really nice car that I think would make someone a nice C3. Does that mean the previous owner would be C3PO? Aaaargh, Jamie, I think you’d better end this post before the force is no longer with you…

A guess a picture of a speedometer is all that’s needed nowadays to claim low mileage. The photo of the car in the parade must be further evidence the car is something special.

Nothing says “attention to detail” quite like a rubber fuel line tie strapped to the air conditioning compressor.

Yup. You don’t get into a parade unless you are special! Here, I’d guess it was that Oyster interior. Best part of this car IMO.

It’s a nice looking car, but when a seller claims low mileage without documentation, it makes me suspicious of the entire car.

Rubber fuel line on the pressure side of the pump and above an exhaust manifold. Recipe for a crispy critter.

The seller’s comment, “Mileage is original to the best of my knowledge”. If so, they were a hard 5,600 miles! I have an 81 with 44,000 miles on it, that I bought new, and it doesn’t show anywhere near the wear that this car does.

The armrest is torn off of the driver’s door, the center dash is cut up for a radio, the leather steering wheel is showing lots of wear, and the front spoiler and lower valance panel are missing.

A lot has gone on under the hood too. The distributor, valve covers, fan, air cleaner, fuel line, headers and other parts are all aftermarket, and not original to the car. It also appears that in 5,600 miles, it’s had a water pump, air conditioning compressor and alternator replaced, and the firewall spray bombed black.

The fan and fan clutch were probably replaced, because the car runs hot. 68-82 Corvettes are “bottom breathers”, getting air to the radiator from under the front bumper. The front spoiler is needed to direct air up through the radiator. The car is also missing the filler panel above the radiator, that keep air moving through the radiator. Without the spoiler and top filler panel, these cars want to overheat.

All of that being said, I don’t think the price is way out of line, and the 80 Dark Claret Metallic, with the Oyster interior, is a pretty combination. Especially with factory glass tops and aluminum wheels.

When buying any car whether a claimed 5,691 miles or 105,691 miles without documentation you must assume “mileage unknown” and offer accordingly. To do otherwise is foolish unless it is a true affair of the heart.

Let me point out the seller says the mileage is original. He doesn’t state that its 5691 miles. So we shall presume it’s 105,691 miles, thus explaining the condition.

Okay, I guess! I find that Corvettes am a boring car to me anyway! Don’t like the body style or interior of them either!

It’s nice when you can buy a car for your neighbors to see and never use lol.

I have owned 3 C-3 Corvettes in the past. I currently have a 46K c-5 which has also been in Parades. It is not perfect either, but in a parade the viewing public only gets a 10 foot look at the car. I will say that the chipped paint on the headlight door is a common thing from it going up and down when the lights are turned on. I would love to have this car in my garage, but to me the price is somewhat high.

I’m glad it has “original miles” instead of those fake “unoriginal miles.”

Agreed. I pity the fool who tries to put some unoriginal miles on any of my rides.

That aside, our first family Vette was a 78 silver anniversary but when these came out with front & rear spoilers they became the best looking of the C3s.

Great color combo but my tastes go L82 4speed or LS + manual swap

Looks like an after market intake (no EGR valve) Probably an Elebrock intake and carb.
