6.6 Liter Survivor: 1978 Pontiac Trans Am

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The seller of this 1978 Pontiac Trans Am is asking $19,750 for this car including the original 15×7 snowflake wheels. The Trans Am is located in Grandview, Texas and is listed for sale here on Facebook Marketplace. The Trans Am was the top model of the Firebird produced by Pontiac. The Firebird was introduced in 1967 and met its demise in 2002.

In 1978, Pontiac offered three engine options for the Trans Am. The base engine was the Pontiac L78 400 cubic inch V8 engine that was rated at 180 horsepower. This is the engine that this car has. Buyers could also opt for the Oldsmobile 403 cubic inch V8 engine that was rated at 185 horsepower. This engine was California emissions compliant. The top performance engine was the Pontiac W72 400 cubic inch V8 engine that was rated at 220 horsepower. This was a 20 horsepower increase over the prior year due to an improved exhaust system.

The brilliant red velour interior on this Trans Am appears to be in excellent shape. The seats and door panels indicate that this car was equipped with the deluxe interior. The car has aftermarket speakers cut in the door panels. Other options include air conditioning, automatic transmission and tilt steering wheel.

The Cameo White interior looks nice for its age. The hood bird is faded and cracked. There is some body damage on the driver’s door and along the back wheel well. The seller states that it is original and comes with the factory 15×7 snowflake wheels. This car is not equipped with the WS6 Performance Handling Package which would have come with the larger 15×8 snowflake wheels. The car is said to run great and the seller admits that he has not fixed much on the car and just driven it during his ownership. The exhaust system appears to have been replaced since the chrome tips have not been replaced.

You sir, are not a competent automotive writer. People do not need an education as to what a Trans am is. We know. also, the interior is red, not white. Lastly, the exhaust tips have been replaced otherwise would be 2 outlets per side. Run Forrest run…

Wow, 5 thumbs up for this guy? Maybe Barn Finds should just post a link to the original ad, toss in a photo or two, and let all you experts in automotive journalism hiding behind your keyboards dream up your own descriptions.

BTW, Bruce’s comment on the exhaust tips was obviously a typo. He states that the exhaust was replaced and should have omitted the “not” in the following sentence for his rationale to make any sense.

Raymond, why do you have a burr in your butt?
This is not an easy job, if it was you may be able to do it…
So you know about the T/A? Good for you. Not everyone else does.
      Don’t be a turd.

If you were a competent automotive writer you would know that this is a Trans Am, not a Trans am…

I’m beginning to believe that at least 90% of t/a’s ’77-’81 have a/c & the hood bird.
Very few came with cruise control, tho this 1 has it.
Oddly, there appears to be more back seat leg room on at least ’74 models with the STD vinyl seats.

I’ve owned 30+ 2nd gen TA’s and most had cruiser control. I thought it was a common option.

“STD vinyl seats” I am assuming that you mean “standard”?? Although, if you are referring to back seats only, I guess it could mean something else, lol.

The standard Vega! based vinyl front bucket seats in a ’74 are a lot thinner than the optional bloated delux ones(also seen in Smokey & Bandit car).
I forgot the ’70 only 1st gen type front bucket seats which are even thinner for max rear seat leg room, tho not very desirable for front seat occupants.

Very liberal use of the term “survivor” for this car!

I had a ’78 without cruise control, hood bird delete and no AC. It had the 4 speed manual transmission, loved it!!
