Mileage can tell you how far a car has traveled, but it doesn’t always tell you how well it has been cared for. That point becomes obvious when looking at this 1988 Mercedes-Benz 300SE. The odometer has accumulated more than 240,000 miles, yet the professional photos reveal a W126 that presents better than many examples showing half that figure. Add approximately $8,000 in documented mechanical work over the past year and a half, and suddenly the mileage becomes less frightening and more of a testament to how durable these cars can be. Located in Nampa, Idaho, this 300SE shows 240,153 miles, carries a clean title, and is offered as a Barn Finds Auction!

Power comes from Mercedes-Benz’s iconic 3.0-liter inline-six, which is paired with an automatic transmission. The seller states that substantial mechanical work has been performed over the years and that documentation accompanies the car. The current owner has reportedly invested about $8,000 during their year and a half of ownership, and the seller describes the Mercedes as having no outstanding issues.

That maintenance history is important because this isn’t being sold as a low-mile collector car that spent decades tucked beneath a cover. It has clearly been driven, and driven extensively. What makes it interesting is how little that use appears to have diminished the car.

The professional photos show straight-looking bodywork and a metallic gray finish that retains an impressive shine. The chrome and bright trim present nicely, the lenses remain clear, and the traditional Mercedes grille and hood ornament give the car the stately looks that made the W126 such an enduring design.

Two notable departures from stock give this sedan a more aggressive look. The suspension has been professionally lowered using coilovers, while reproduction AMG Monoblock-style wheels are wrapped in Falken tires. The modifications lower the car without making the stance excessive, and the five-spoke wheels look right at home beneath the conservative W126 bodywork. The seller otherwise describes the Mercedes as stock and original.

That restraint continues inside. The cabin retains the classic W126 combination of leather, wood trim, large analog instruments, and substantial switchgear. The photographs reveal upholstery that presents exceptionally well for the mileage, including a remarkably tidy rear seat. The dashboard, door panels, carpeting, and wood trim also appear to have survived well. The seller does note that the A/C system is currently inoperative and the factory stereo doesn’t work. There is a Bluetooth stereo installed inside the glovebox, but it isn’t currently hooked up.

A photograph of the instrument cluster provides the inevitable reminder that this Mercedes really has covered approximately 240,000 miles. For some buyers, that number might seem intimidating, but for those who know these cars, it’s a badge of honor that is worth carrying on. Cars generally don’t reach this mileage and remain this presentable without someone caring about them.

The engine compartment reinforces that impression. It remains orderly and largely factory in appearance, with the 3.0-liter six nestled beneath the hood rather than surrounded by questionable aftermarket modifications. The seller says repair documentation is available, giving prospective bidders a chance to see exactly where the recent mechanical investment went.

That documentation may ultimately be one of this car’s most valuable assets. Buying an inexpensive old S-Class can be easy; catching up on years of deferred maintenance can be something else entirely. A car that has already received thousands of dollars in recent work may make considerably more sense than a cheaper example whose needs remain unknown.

This 300SE is a testament to Mercedes-Benz’s build quality and the level of passion many S-Class owners have for their cars. This example probably isn’t for the collector searching for the lowest odometer reading available. Its appeal is different. It offers the opportunity to own a clean W126 that somebody has already been willing to spend real money maintaining, while the subtle suspension and wheel upgrades give it a little more attitude than the typical stock sedan.

And perhaps that 240,000-mile odometer reading is actually the most interesting thing about it. If a Mercedes can travel nearly a quarter-million miles and still look this good, doesn’t that say something about both the car and the people who have cared for it?
