64k Original Miles: 1966 Ford Mustang

It comes down to a matter of personal preference. When a person ventures out to buy a classic car that is ready to be driven and enjoyed, some buyers prefer to hand over their cash for a vehicle that has been meticulously restored. They have an assurance that all of the potential rust problems have been addressed and that fresh steel has replaced old. Others prefer to find an original survivor where all of the car’s metal is as it rolled off the production line. This 1966 Mustang represents the latter scenario, and it does present well. The owner has chosen to part with the Ford, so he has listed it for sale here on eBay. It is located in Albany, New York, and while the bidding currently sits at $8,100, the reserve isn’t met.

The Wimbledon White Mustang has spent almost its entire life in California. This is good news for potential buyers because Mustangs from that location don’t tend to be the victims of rust problems. This car is said to be no exception because it is claimed that it has never had any rust. There is nothing visible externally, with all of the lower regions of the body looking particularly clean. The photos that the seller supplies are pretty limited, and we aren’t given a peek underneath this classic. It has received a previous repaint in its original color, but it isn’t clear when this occurred. The paint still holds an impressive shine, while the panels seem to be free from noticeable dings and dent. The trim and chrome appear to be in good order, while the addition of the GT fog lamps is a classy touch. The history behind those isn’t clear, although it is possible that they may have been dealer-fitted when the car was new. The tinted glass looks to be in good condition, while the damage-prone hubcaps look flawless.

The buyer won’t need to spend a cent on this Mustang’s interior because all of the work has been done. The car has received an all-new interior, and it presents superbly. There isn’t a mark to be found anywhere, and there is nothing for the buyer to do but hit the road and have some fun. There is a deviation from standard, as the vehicle has been fitted with an aftermarket console. This has a CD player and speakers, while there is an additional set of speakers in the rear parcel tray. Reversing these changes would not be difficult, and the console should be considered a smart move. That means that the dash hasn’t been cut for the CD player, and the original radio remains in situ. The seller doesn’t provide any engine photos, and this is a classic with a drivetrain that might not appeal to everyone. What resides under the hood is a T-Code 200ci 6-cylinder engine. The motor is backed by a 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic transmission. While there is no power assistance for the steering, the buyer will get power front disc brakes. In its original form, this motor would have produced 120hp and could propel the vehicle through the ¼ mile in a leisurely 19 seconds. However, the seller indicates that there have been a number of upgrades performed, but he doesn’t indicate what these are. It seems that a bit more power may have been unlocked, which would be a bonus. Whether it would be enough to threaten the figures of a C-Code 289 would be debatable, but it still might make this an enjoyable cruiser.

Spotting a 1st Generation Mustang that has managed to retain 100% of its original steel is a great find. The 6-cylinder drivetrain might not appeal to some potential buyers, but the upgrades to that powerplant make it an intriguing car. The owner says that the reserve has been set very low, making this a classic worth watching. You never know, but someone may be about to score themselves a great little car at an affordable price.

Nice looking Mustang but the six cylinder just doesn’t do it for me.

I had a 64 1/2 Mustang convertible with this 6 cyl engine. I was stationed at Fort Ord CA at the time ant that “6” propelled me down the highways and Big Sur just fine. Also, it was easy on gas consumption – especially for “town driving” Monterey streets.

If it had a V8…….I’d be on the Taconic Parkway on my way to Albany (90 miles away from me) Beautiful car to add to my Mustang garage.

A neighbor I went to High School with bought a nearly identical 1966 that was immaculate. Same exterior color, light tan/cream deluxe interior, C4 and AM radio. Car was junk within 2 years-so pathetic.

The 200 6 handles better in the 65 -66. Better than the V8 too nose heavy with out adding to the stick suspension

I had a ’66 standard Coupe with 289, 4 speed, limited slip and handling suspension package (stiffer springs, bigger sway bar, disc brakes). It handled great. Easy to retrofit to to a 6-cyl if you’re going to upgrade to a V8 anyway.

Better in the snow too – back in the day.

I’ve never seen such a skinny trim piece around thevwheel wells. If it’s a stick on it’s a very good job and protects a normally abused edge.

Advert pulled because of “an error in the listing”? Hmmmmmm!
    What error?
Been looking for a car like this and then it goes “pear shaped”. Go figure.

This car looks in mint condition. What a beauty! A photo of the engine would be good. There is only one possible drawback, and it would be a deal killer for me. I drove a Mustang from California to Oregon many years ago. The steering wheel column was off center about two or three inches to the right. It was very annoying.

Is that carpet stock texture & color? Seems off in shade to me.
I would expect the seats to be 2-tone blue to match the door panels,
or the door panels to be white.
My ’70 boxy futura had 2 tone blue bench seat.

Yeah that’s what I’m saying. Nothing wrong with a v-8 , but you’ll want to beef up the suspension from stock if you want it to handle as well as a sprint 6
