6k Mile 1988 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS

The General Motors G-Bodies were restyled for 1981, with the Buick Grand National first going into production the following year and understandably getting most of the gearhead fanfare from the bunch until its demise in 1987.  But the Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS scored high in the appearance department as well, and while it didn’t have the same kind of power to back up the sporty looks the car was a fun ride and nowadays is a lot more affordable than the GN.  This 1988 Monte Carlo Super Sport here on eBay is described as showroom new by its owner, so if you’ve been in the market for a well-preserved example this one’s probably worth considering.  The Chevy is down in Apopka, Florida, where $18,100 so far has failed to lift the reserve.

The car is claimed to have only been driven 10k kilometers, as that’s how the odometer here is calibrated, or 6k US miles.  It’s said to have come out of a private collection in Canada but has a Michigan title and is now in The Sunshine State, so I might push for a little more information about its background before getting too out of hand with my offer.  But these seem to be going up in value as of late, so if everything checks out it’s probably a pretty decent investment.

The black body with red decals was a good choice for the SS back in’88, and this was also the final year for the fourth-generation Monte Carlo before it took a break until being reintroduced as a front-wheel-drive Lumina in disguise for the 1995 model.  The seller says the paint here is still amazing, which I guess he means as amazing as an eighties GM finish can be, with all of the paint stated as original except for the right front fender, which at some point got a respray due to a scratch.

When a vehicle is described as appearing showroom new, I expect the best and that includes the inside, with the interior here not disappointing.  The seller says it still sparkles and looks like the seats have never been sat in, plus that new-car-smell is mentioned as still being present, so I’m not finding much in there to criticize.  The fact that the factory cassette Stereo is still in the dash and the ashtray remains unused is also a plus.

The primary reason these cars are so much more affordable than the GN can (or maybe can’t is a better word) be found under the hood, as all that’s there is a 305 making 180 horsepower.  But the engine compartment looks like a time capsule back to 1988 as does the undercarriage, so if the mileage is accurate and an 80s Monte Carlo SS is what you’re after this one may be hard to beat.  How much higher in price do you think this Super Sport will have to climb before the reserve is reached?

Spot on. Those original tires are 36 years old. Same for every other piece of foam/rubber on it. To make any semblance of a reliable driver that would all need to be services/replaced anyway.

Too expensive to just drive and enjoy and it’s value as a collectible? I’ll take the writer’s word for it that they’re going up in value. But it is nice, always liked those wheels. SBC conversion? But that would ruin it’s value as a collectible. *\0/*

The typical case here….Asking too much money for the peak of mailaise era performance and will become a “nickel and dimer”when you start putting miles on it.If you can turn a wrench this would be a good daily driver for you….

Looks every bit the part. Sweet car from a time when car companies were trying to keep the flame alive. For many people this car has no value but for someone else it’s a ticket back in time or a dream realized.

Nice car but, IMO, it’s not worth that kind of cash. I agree with RW and Fox owner.
